Dr. Robert Mortimer, Colorado State University, a calving expert and one of the best in the world at teaching cattle producers how to minimize calving difficulty and to deliver vigorous calves, will be in Dupuyer on Jan. 19. The Stockman’s Seminar will start at 11:30 a.m. with a lunch and registration at the Dupuyer Community Hall. There is a minimal fee for lunch and registration. Dr. John Paterson, MSU Extension Beef Specialist, will be the first speaker at 12:30 p.m. He will address herd health topics including nutrition, vaccinations, parasite control, and mineral supplementation. At 2:30 p.m. Dr. Mortimer will provide ranchers with a better understanding of the delivery process, why cows need to lie down during calving, how to rotate the calf to prevent hip lock, how to apply the correct direction of pull, and how to deal with hard to pull and abnormal presentations such as breech births. If you have questions or need more information, contact Dan Picard at the Extension Office in the courthouse at 271-4054.
