 SEVEN TIME CHAMPS – The Conrad Cowboy wrestling team stormed to their seventh consecutive divisional championship in Chinook on Saturday. This weekend they will have 16 wrestlers at the state meet in Billings. From the left in front is Colter Knox, Colby Johns, Jared Giard, Andrew Lehnerz. I-O Photo courtesy of Colleen Moritz The Cowboy wrestlers put the competition to the mat in Chinook on Saturday and breezed to their seventh consecutive Northern B-C Tournament title. Team places and scores looked like this: 1. CONRAD 226; 2. Chinook 118.5; 3. Cut Bank 109; 4. Harlem 97; 5. Malta 84.5; 6. Shelby 83; 7. Big Sandy 24; 8. Chester J-I 0. The Cowboys were able to place 16 wrestlers at the state meet held in Billings this weekend at the MetraPark Arena. Conrad will be looking to take the bark out of the Scotties of Glasgow who are last year’s state champions and were able to qualify 17 wrestlers for the big dance. However, the Scotties only had three wrestlers in first place from their divisional tourney while the Cowboys crowned five champions. Coach Kevin Moritz was very happy with the tournament and the week put in by the wrestlers. “We have some small injuries to deal with this week,” he said, “but I’m sure we will be ready by Friday.” Bryce Gernaat and Brett Bishop faced off against each other for the first and second spot at 112 pounds. Gernaat came on to take a title with a 9-0 major decision. At 98 pounds, Kyle Judisch placed second and Jaren VanDyke pinned his opponent from Chinook in 1:42 for third place. Scotty Schlosser at 119, defeated his man from Harlem with a 6-1 decision and Johnny Schlosser placed fourth. Jared Giard, 125, came on to capture a first place with a tight 6-5 decision win. Colter Knox (125) just missed getting in the tournament, suffering a 6-4 loss. Colby Johns came on to capture a third place at 130, and Logan Erickson did the same at 135. Andrew Lehnerz, 140 went the full route, getting a pin-win in 5:29 and a first place ribbon. At 145, Bryce Watterud placed sixth and at 152 Austin Breding won a 5-4 decision taking third place. Trent Knox took no time at all in placing third at 160, pinning his man in :16. At 171, Norman Vanderbush was in second place after dropping a 10-4 decision and Paul O’Brien, also at 171 came in at fourth. Aaron Lehnerz, 189, came on to take a pin fall in 1:30 and collect a third place. JD Hough placed first in the Hwt. class. The whole team and statisticians shared the Cowboy Wrestler of the Week award. Moritz said, “This was a total team effort to win the Divisional tournament and everyone showed outstanding achievement and sportsmanship.”
