Cops 4 Kids football ... fun for all
FLAGGED – Deputy Mike Galloway celebrates after bursting through the line and flagging (sacking) the Has Been quarterback, Calvin Schlepp during the Cops 4 Kids football game on Friday. The joy was short lived, on the next play Schlepp threw a touchdown pass. I-O Photo by Buck Traxler
Friday, 15 high school students, 12 CHS alumni and 23 officers representing varied law offices from the Golden Triangle faced off in a flag football game fund-raiser.
The Conrad Lions Club sponsored the Cops 4 Kids event and proceeds will help defray expenses of Lane Judisch and Ryan Riewer so they can participate in the Down Under International Games, playing golf, in Australia this summer.
Jeremy Farnstrom was going to go there as well to play football, but a recent surgery has prevented that.
Law enforcement came to the field with the name, Highline Heat. The high schoolers were simply known as the Students and the alumni were called the Has Been Students.
The Has Been and the Heat faced off in first half of competition and the former students had first possession.
Calvin Schlepp was doing duty as QB for the Has Been and quickly found flanker TJ Bennyhoff on two lass completions that moved the ball to the 10-yard line.
Mike Galloway from the Sheriff’s Department, then burst past a blocker and “flagged” Schlepp for a loss. However on the next play, Schlepp found Ross Judisch in the end zone for a TD. Four plays, one score, 6-0 for the Has Been.
This was just an early indication of scores to come. The Heat couldn’t move the ball and the Has Been took over on downs at the 20. Schlepp promptly connected with Ross Judisch again for a TD. The PAT was no good. One play, one score, 12-0.
On the next series the Heat tossed a pass, but their QB hit the wrong receiver, with Danny McFarland making the pick. On the second play from scrimmage, Schlepp tossed a pass to McFarland. He scores! Two plays, score, 20-0.
Judisch would catch another TD pass and McFarland lofted a strike to TJ Bennyhoff for still another score and a 34-0 first period lead.
In the second quarter, McFarland returned a punt for a TD, Bennyhoff picked off a pass for a score, and Cale Fitzgerald caught a TD pass for a 62-0 lead at the halftime break.
A highlight for the Heat was new deputy Tim Ketcheson intercepting a pass and Galloway getting his second flag (sack).
In the second half, it was the Students and the Heat. Garrett Grubb found Katie Schlepp for a TD pass and Brent Bandow was on the receiving end of a scoring pass.
The Students roster looked like this: Ryan Riewer, Kellen Judisch, Lane Judisch, Luke Weisgram, Bjorn Swanson, Katie Schlepp, Cassie Peters, Austin Breding, Logan Erickson, Brent Bandow, Garrett Grubb, Brad Brenteson, Patrick Fagan, Norman Vanderbush, and Rhett Orcutt. Greg Orcutt coached them.
The Has Been included Ross Judisch, Colby Fitzgerald, Cale Fitzgerald, Calvin Schlepp, Danny McFarland, Jordan Hepp, TJ Bennyhoff, David Ahmed, Shawn Brown, Tyler Judisch, Adam Totdahl, and Zach Lockyer. They were coached by Mark Fitzgerald and Jim Judisch.
The Highline Heat were made up of players; Danielle Brenny, Shannon Gabbard, Jeff Pruttis, Robert Skorupa, Mike Galloway, Carl Suta, Tim Ketcheson and Eddy Erickson, all of the Pondera County Sheriff’s Department; Bill Price, Jason Korst, and Logan Martin from the Conrad Police Department; Bob Bender (local), Mark Wilfore, Scott Waddell, Scott Dumas, David Boggs, and Butch Huseby, all from the Montana Highway Patrol; Becky Everhard and Ryan Larson from the Toole County Sheriff’s office; Chris Wood–FBI, and Chad Mobley, James Solum, Dave Ruiz, Bob Brusven, from Customs and Border Protection. Chief Gary Dent of the CPD was the team coach.
Before the game, the Conrad VFW and American Legion presented the American flag and Laura Linn and Jenna Stratman sang the National Anthem. Sean Strickland announced the game.
It is hoped that the contest will become an annual event with the proceeds going to a local community project.
