Page 1 of 2 By Buck Traxler, I-O Editor At their regular meeting on Wednesday morning, county commissioners adopted the FY08 budget. Some elected official offices and management areas saw reductions in their budgets compared to last year. For example, the commissioners reduced their budget by $7,600; the Clerk of Court $900, the Justice Court $700, buildings and grounds $5,000, the DES office $1,000, with the road section dropping $26,000 and bridges $60,000. Commission Chairman Cynthia Johnson said, “Pondera County will increase the number of Sheriff’s deputies by one position. All other staffing and addition compensation will remain budgeted to the amount in the job descriptions for employees and at the status when all were elected except for the County Attorney.” The County Attorney position has been made a full-time position. Last year (FY07) and before, it was a half-time position. The Coroner position has combined with the Sheriff’s position. The public safety budget reflects the Coroner transition and the increase of one deputy. Johnson noted that, “The Clerk of Court office appears to be functioning at a staffing pattern established with the 2005-06 budget and will remain at that level.” The County Road Department is currently functioning with one less employee than at this time last year, however, the position will eventually need to be filled and the budget reflects a staffing pattern similar to the ’07 fiscal year. A 3.2 percent cost of living (COLA) increase and a 1.3 percent raise was approved for elected officials. The Road Administrator was granted a four percent increase. The Clerk and Recorder requested and was granted an additional $2,000 for Elections Administration. The Treasurer also requested and was granted an additional $2,000. All county employees, effective July 1, 2007, received a 50-cent per hour increase. The county contribution to health insurance, for a single employee, remained at $300 per month.
