It’s a new season, a new coach and a new schedule and the Cowboys are excited about hitting the gridiron.
Joe Moerkerke, a long-time assistant coach, five years, has taken the helm as head coach of the Cowboys.
The Hysham native is brimming over with enthusiasm and it shows in the two-a-days the team is having as they get ready for the new year.
“Strong team play is really evident so far,” he says. Teamwork is an item the coach is stressing.
Last year the Cowboys were 1-3 in conference play, 3-5 overall and placed fourth in the District.
A new football schedule does not have the Malta Mustangs on the dance card.
That doesn’t bother Moerkerke too much as he picks them to be state champions, not to mention that they rolled over Conrad in the season opener 42-6 last year.
“I like the new schedule, especially since we open with three non-conference games and will have those under our belt,” he said.
While high school schedules are always subject to change after they are printed, the lineup goes like this:
The Cowboys open on the road on Aug. 31, playing Cascade and then go to Manhattan (near Bozeman). “That should be a good game,” says the coach.
The home opener will have the Fairfield Eagles flying into Conrad on Sept. 14. Following them will be Cut Bank on Sept. 29, which is the Homecoming weekend.
Conrad goes up I-15 to play Shelby and on Oct. 12 the Glasgow Scotties come to Conrad for Senior Night.
