COOL TWO – Cowboy Riley Styren slipped home a reverse lay-in for two points in the contest against Cut Bank. In limited play he had the one hoop and three rebounds. I-O Photo by Buck Traxler The Cowboys gained a split in their final two games of 2007, winning big in Fort Benton and losing big at home against the Wolves. On Thursday, playing in Fort Benton, Conrad broke open a close game, 15-14, exploding for a 24-9 run to go ahead 39-23 at the intermission. The ‘Horns rallied back in the second half to outscore Conrad 25-22 but it was nowhere close enough to overcome the early lead. Garrett Grubb put together a nice steady game. He banged home 18 points, pulled down eight boards, had a pair of assists and two steals and a blocked shot to lead the Cowboys. Lane Judisch canned 11 points, came down with three boards, dished out four assists and had four steals on the night. Justin Prewett cashed in for eight points and had nine boards, Brent Bandow had seven points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Bryce Nelson tallied five points, Eric Norby, Justin Philipps, and Riley Styren all scored four each. “We put together a nice run at the end of the second quarter to open the game up and extended our lead in the third quarter,” said coach Tyson Anderson. The team hit on 23 of 47 shots from the floor for 48 percent shooting. They went 11-17 at the line. Fort Benton scored on 21 shots from the floor and were just 1-3 at the line. The win moved Conrad to 4-1 overall while the ‘Horns went to 0-5. Friday the Wolves came in for the final game of 2007 and in a strange contest, they dominated Cowboys 59-22. Early on Norby tied the contest at 6-6 but that was as close to any kind of a lead Conrad would get. Near the end of the quarter, the Cowboys, trailing 10-12, committed three straight turnovers that were converted to scores by the Wolves. They ran off eight unanswered points for a 20-10 lead at the end of the first period. It went from bad to worse in the second period. Conrad could not buy a bucket and to borrow a baseball term, the Wolves pitched a shutout as they racked up 16 unanswered points (24 from the first period). It was two minutes into the third period when Grubb finally stopped the bleeding and hit one of two free throws from the charity stripe. Coach Anderson commented, “We didn’t execute on either end of the floor. Our transition defense was not good and we didn’t play our brand of basketball.” Not a single Cowboy was even close to reaching double figures in scoring. Norby was a co-leader in scoring with four points. And all of those came from the line. Prewett scored four as well; all of his points came from the field. Josiah Moerkerke, Grubb, and Judisch each scored three points. Styren and Bandow both had a hoop and Nate Gage hit a free throw. Conrad scored on just six of 35 shots from the floor for 17 percent shooting and was 10-15 from the line. Cut Bank hit on 24 shots from the field and went 6-14 at the line. Conrad is 0-2 in conference play and 4-2 over all. Cut Bank is 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Conrad opens the New Year at home with Choteau on Jan. 3 and then play in at Fairfield (Jan. 4) and Harlem on Jan. 5.
