The Cowgirls’ volleyball squad pulled out a tough match against a stubborn Shelby team on Friday.
Scores went like this: 25-20, 25-14, 17-25, 19-25, 18-16.
In the first set, the Cowgirls took a 1-0 early lead and never looked back, and in somewhat of a rarity for volleyball, there were no ties or lead changes.
Kaytlin Fowler went to the line and put up a seven-point run for the Cowgirls that included an ace.
Kelly Johns bumped up a couple of serves from the backcourt that were converted to scores, and Kenley King slapped over a kill shot.
Later in the game, Roberta Kronebusch dropped in back-to-back aces and Kylee Schlepp tipped over a shot in a four-point run.
In the second game, it was all Conrad, although the Lady Coyotes managed to tie the score twice at 1-1 in the beginning of the game and 15-15 near the end. Taylor Johnson put up a nifty set for Roberta Kronebusch who slashed the ball back across the net for a kill shot. Johnson also set up Schlepp for a kill shot in the 11-point win.
Cari Vandenacre also dished up an assist and ended the game at the line on a four-point run.
In the next two games, for as much that went right for the Cowgirls in the first two games, all of a sudden it went wrong. For Shelby, shots fell in for points. For Conrad, passes went wrong and kill shots went long.
The tiebreaker game, which goes to 15 points, saw seven ties and one lead change.
Conrad fell behind early 0-1 and while they stayed close, never quite caught up until late in the contest.
Schlepp got the team into an 11-11 tie with a nifty tip of the ball at the net and then pounded a kill shot  back for the 12-11 lead. King had an ace for a 13-11 lead.
Shelby came on to tie the contest at 15-15 and go on top 15-16 but couldn’t put the game away. The Cowgirls came back to tie and off a set by Fowler. Schlepp put them up 17-16 and they picked up the other needed point for the 18-16 win.
Conrad put over 11 ace serves. Kronebusch dropped in three and Vandenacre, Johns and Fowler had two each.
Schlepp put back 24 of 55 team kill shots. King ripped back 12, Kronebusch and Johns six each.
Of the 48 assists, Fowler dished up 29 and Johnson 10. Schlepp blocked four shots at the net and Fowler three. Melissa Barringer dug up 19 of the 59-team digs, Schlepp put up 12 and Fowler eight.
Saturday in Cascade, the Cowgirls fell in four games by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 25-13.
Schlepp put back 14 kill shots, Fowler put up 23 assists, King dumped in five aces, and Johns, Schlepp and King each had one blocked shot.
The Cowgirls moved their record to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Friday the ladies are in Fort Benton and Saturday the Cut Bank Wolves come to the corral for a match.
Early action begins about 4:15 p.m. with the varsity on the court around 7:30 p.m.
