The Cowgirl softball team ended their season with an overall 17-8 record and going 2-2 at the state tournament in Great Falls over the weekend.
They opened the tourney with a tough 8-0 loss to St. Ignatius, bounced back to take a thrilling, extra inning 2-1 victory over Colstrip, bombed Cut Bank 11-1 and saw their season close with a 6-1 loss to Missoula Loyola.
Facing Mission in the tourney opener, “The Cowgirls couldn’t get their bats going,” commented Coach Sandy Syvertson.
The team managed only four hits in the game. Mission posted six, but had eight walks in the contest.
Hitting for the Cowgirls were Kaytlin Fowler going 2-3, Samantha Fagan 1-2, and Stephanie Murphy 1-2.
Fowler took the loss, fanning five, giving up six hits and walking eight. The Cowgirls committed three errors and left eight runners on base. Ashley Mitchell, the winning Mission pitcher, struck out 12 Cowgirls and issued four walks.
Now in loser out action, Conrad faced Colstrip in a game slated to begin at 9 a.m., however, due to rain, they didn’t take to the field until noon.
The Fillies put the first score on the board in the second inning and the Cowgirls tied it up in the fourth.
Conrad won the game in the 11th inning on an infield hit with Fowler, who had walked and stolen second base, coming around all the way on the infield hit by Sullivan.
Sullivan, a senior, picked up the win, giving up eight hits, walking none, and striking out nine. The Cowgirls committed four errors and had only five hits in the game.
