I-O Photo by Buck Traxler The Cowgirls got off to a shaky start of the District 1B tourney in Shelby on Thursday, falling to the tournament host team Coyotes, 52-43. Conrad was down 13-7 after the first period, but made a dent in the lead with a 15-13 scoring advantage in the second period to trail by four, 26-22 at the break. But the Coyotes went on a 15-5 run after the intermission and went to take the win. Katie Schlepp pumped home 16 points to lead the Cowgirls while Lyndsey Green hit the hoops for 11. Jennifer Silvernale scored five, Anna Pearson did the same. Kylee Schlepp, Kaytlin Fowler and Beth Grubb all had a hoop. The Cowgirls hit on 17 shots from the floor and were 6-12 from the line. Shelby scored on 18 shots from the field, but was 14-19 at the line. Friday the Cowgirls faced off with Choteau. Conrad hit the scoreboard first when Katie Schlepp hit a jumper off a nifty feed by Green and then banged in a lay up off a rebound for a quick 4-0 advantage. It was one the team would not give up, as they moved to a 45-34 win. Schlepp also moved to the outside for a three-bomb, Peters pounded in four points and Green moved the nets for six points including a shot right at the buzzer as the Cowgirls went on a 17-9 run. Katie Schlepp led the team in scoring with 14 points. She pulled down seven boards, had one assist, a blocked shot and two steals. Green was right behind with 13 markers. With nine rebounds, the senior was one short of having a double-double game. She blocked four shots and had one steal. Silvernale cashed in for six points, Peters did the same, Pearson popped home a trey from downtown, and Kylee Schlepp scored the same, but went a different route, getting her three points from the charity stripe. The Cowgirls hit on 17-43 shots from the field and were 9-18 at the line. The team pulled down 33 rebounds, dished out four assists, had 15 turnovers, five blocked shots and seven steals. The team scored 11 points off of turnovers and eight points off the bench. Saturday in the consolation contests, it was all Conrad-Cut Bank for both the girls’ and boys’ games. The Cowgirls jumped out to a one-point lead against the Lady Wolves off a free throw by Katie Schlepp. Cut Bank came back with a six point run only to have Conrad pop in five points to tie the game 6-6 at the end of the fist period. The second period had two lead changes and three ties. The scoring was fueled by Peters, who knocked down six points in the period, guiding Conrad to 15-14 lead at the break. Helped by five Cowgirl turnovers and two quick back-to-back buckets by the Wolves’ Danni Johnson, Cut Bank rallied for a 23-25 lead heading to the final eight minutes of play. But the final stanza belonged to Conrad as they exploded for a 25-5 run to come from behind a grab a 48-30 win.
