I-O Photo by Buck Traxler The Pondera County Canal and Reservoir Company (PCCRC) has begun renovation work on the old dam at the south end of Lake Frances. The top of the dam will get a makeover, the two towers at the dam will be replaced with one new tower and pipes under the dam will be replaced. Replacing and fixing up the dam will be an overall $3.5 million project. Tamietti Construction of Great Falls is the prime contractor. The old tower that extends into the lake from the dam will be completely taken out and the core wall of the dam will go down and be replaced. Work will start as soon as the water in the lake is down. Water was shut off on Aug. 15. The tower, which is on the dam now, will be cut off and replaced. The tower is where water from the lake is released to Districts 3-4-5. District 3 is the Manson area, District 4 is the Ledger area and District 5 is Conrad. Presently there are two pipes under the dam. When reconstruction is complete, the PCCRC will be using just one pipe. “Everything from the towers to the dam will be replaced,” says Gerald Miller.
