SHINY NEW – The city’s new trash containers line an alley. Almost all of the new containers have been assembled and put out in residential alleys. The new truck should be in Conrad in about a month. It was reported to be in Denver on Monday. Residents are urged not to use the new containers until the after the truck arrives. I-O Photo by Buck Traxler Monday evening city aldermen Sandy Syvertson and Wally McHenry took their oath of office. Both had been re-elected to the council in the November election. Mayor John Shevlin also administered the oath of office to the new city attorney, T. Kai Lee. Battling a cold, Lee gave a quick report so she could be excused. She is working on ordinances, one concerning garbage. She encouraged the council to consider looking at a codifying book for ordinances, noting it would cost a little more, but “It would be well worth it in the long run.” Before she left, Lee took some good-natured ribbing for wearing a Bobcat outfit into a “Grizzly Den.” Before the meeting began, Cub Scouts from Pack 531, John Anthony Friede, Michael Awtrey and Kenny Habets, led the council in saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. There were no building permits to act on, however, the council did have one water contract. Monte and Carey Berzel transferred a water contract to Mike Bowers. Council members approved the transfer on a 4-0 vote. The mayor appointed Greg Jensen to another term on the library board and Colin Veach to the Police Commission. Another individual needs to be named to the safety board, replacing Patrick Duffey who earlier resigned. Police Chief Gary Dent reported that there were 175 calls for service during the month of December. Among them were six rides home from the bars. There was one DUI, the first issued in three months. Five accidents were investigated, five thefts reported and 23 traffic citations issued, seven from one incident. Public Works Director Richard Anderson reported that most of the new trash containers have been assembled and placed in the alleys. He urged the public not to put garbage in them yet; they are not ready for use until the new truck arrives. He said the truck is making its way here from Oklahoma and is presently in Denver. It should be in Conrad in about a month. He noted that use of the new automated system, “will take some adjustments along the way.” Cheryl Curry from the Port Authority told the council the PA has received an inquiry for a new business here and heard from another business that wants to expand. They also had a state audit to track CDBG funds and make sure they (the PA) were doing it right. The PA passed the audit. The next regular meeting of the council is Jan. 22, one day later than usual because of the Martin Luther King holiday.
