PINK PETUNIA – This petunia plant is 42 inches tall and 40 inches wide. There is one petunia in the center with three white trailing plants, grown by Marge Gebhart. I-O Photo by Buck Traxler When somebody has a nice garden, we like to say, “You have a green thumb.” That being the case, then Marge Gebhart has two green thumbs. With a lot of water and tender loving care, she has an exceptional garden that explodes with color. Miracle Grow, a product she doesn’t use, would be envious of her accomplishment. Gebhart is 86 years young and says her hobby of digging and transplanting which she does on her own, “is quite an accomplishment in my golden years. “It is also good therapy,” she adds. She has over 80 containers in her yard and patio and they include bears, roosters, lambs, swans, frogs, a donkey and a giraffe. About a year ago, she added miniature spreading and other roses to her garden. She also maintains a detailed account of her gardening activity for her report to the Garden Club. A part of that is the demonstrating of four small plants in a pot of roses that were eventually transplanted into a seven-inch pot. The results, she said, were four roses in one pot. Her yield from 10 rose plants was 40 rose plants in various sizes and colors. One of her special delights is a Salvia Bonfire that is 18 inches in height. She explained that the seeds were planted in an egg carton and transplanted several times and finally five plants were placed in a 12-inch container. Today the plant is 30 inches tall and 36 inches wide. She notes it is top heavy and has had to be moved three times for protection from the wind. Another favorite of hers is a Pink Double Petunia. Gebhart put one petunia in the center with three white trailing plants. The container with the plants to the patio floor is 42 inches tall and 40 inches wide. The public is invited to view her cast of colorful flowers and plants at 204 S. Delaware.
