High school in need of new locker rooms, gym floor    While it may not look like it as you stand outside, the high school infrastructure is in nothing short of disarray on the inside.
Readers will recall that last week, the school trustees passed a resolution asking voters to pass a $6.3 million General Obligation Bond (GOB) in an election on April 8 to remodel and bring the school up to date.
The present locker rooms at CHS do not meet fire codes. They are also not handicapped accessible and they don’t meet Title IX regulations.
Because the locker rooms are below the sewer line level, this causes “gray water” to be moved by sump pumps and are breeding grounds for any number of germs and mold.
The pipes are outdated and leak. By today’s standards, there are not enough locker rooms to meet the current needs of the school. “We regularly dress teams in classrooms instead of the locker rooms,” says Superintendent of Schools Lynn Utterback.
The remodeling plan is ambitious. Build a new gym bordering Michigan St. with four new locker rooms at ground level. “This would allow us to meet all safety and health codes,” said Utterback.
The plus side is that would allow the school to meet the students’ needs for PE and extracurricular activity, not to mention the hosting of boys’ and girls’ games on the same night. This feature would eliminate some weekday games.
In addition, coupled with a larger gym floor, it would allow the school district to sponsor school and other activities to benefit students and the community.
