Irvin paces track team with six first places |

In two meets over the week, Irvin claimed six individual wins to pace the Cowboy track team. I-O Photo by Buck Traxler In a close meet on Tuesday, on a blustery, cold afternoon, the Cowboy track team edged Shelby by five points and captured their invitational track meet. Team places and scores went like this: 1. Conrad 119, 2. Shelby 112, 3. Simms 81, 4. Power 69.5, 5. Valier 59, 6. Choteau 49.5, 7. Great Falls Central 24, 8. Heart Butte 0. Cowboy senior Clark Irvin paced the Cowboys by collecting three first places. In the 400m dash he edged teammate Aaron Lehnerz 58.3 to 59.0 for one top placing. Then in the 110HH he ran to a first place with a time of 17.4 and picked up his third win of the day in the 300H with a clocking of 46.1. Paul O’Brien placed sixth in the 400m in 1:02 and Trent Knox was in seventh at 1:03. In the 800m, Graham Grubb placed third in 2:40 and Justin Bowen was in fifth at 3:00. The 400m (Josiah Moerkerke, Chase Cork, Irvin and Norm Vanderbush) and 1600m (Lehnerz, Bowen, Grubb, and Knox) relay teams placed second in both events with times of 51.1 and 4:23 respectively. Lehnerz picked up another first for the team, clearing the bar in the pole vault at 10-0. He was also third in the 100m dash in 12.4. Knox placed sixth in the pole vault at 8-0. Boyd Matheson blew away the competition in the discus, winning the event for the Cowboys with a toss of 116-6. Gus EagleSpeaker of Valier was in second with a flip of the flat plate that was good for 105-4. In the shot put, Knox came in third with a heave of 35-2. Matheson was fifth at 34-10 and O’Brien sixth at 34-1. David Ratzburg tossed the javelin 129-2 to come in third there and Dan Hadcock was fifth and Chase Cork sixth in the high jump, both going over the bar at 5-2. On the girls’ side, the team competition was even closer with Choteau just getting past Conrad with two points to spare. Team scores and places went this way: 1. Choteau 127, 2. Conrad 125, 3. Shelby 75, 4. Great Falls Central 52, 5. Simms 27, 6. Power 23, 7. Valier 16, 8. Heart Butte 15.
