“Keep rockin’ in the free world!” That’s the sentiment in the first e-mail received by Bebe Berland from her son, USN Lieutenant j.g. Taylor Berland Carvajal, after he landed in his assigned post in Iraq last week. According to Lt. Carvajal, it’s “sand, sand and more sand” and for a Navy Lieutenant, that’s like being permanently the beach! Right now he and his platoon are enjoying the hospitality of one of Saddam’s old palaces, and, according to him, living like kings. That’s encouraging for anyone heading to the Middle East and makes up a little for the enforced absence from family and friends that our warriors must endure to maintain our freedom from oppression and terrorism. Carrying 50 pounds weight of body armor plus weapons around the desert every day would tax the strength and willpower of the most determined warriors, but our troops still manage to smile their way through. Carvajal’s wife, Jessica Winski, is currently employed in London and supports his choice to volunteer. A graduate of USC, Carvajal earned his Master’s degree at the University of Virginia, where they met. He joined the USN Reserve three years ago and prior to his deployment to Iraq, he was employed by Price Waterhouse Cooper in London. Colin Veitch, Carvajal’s step-son and Berland both live in Conrad.
