Ken Larson is new principal at CHS
CORRECT NAME – Ken Larson, not Olson, as printed in last week’s edition, has taken over as the new principal at Conrad High School. He replaces Paul Stenerson, who once again has retired.
PUBLISHER’S NOTE: In last week’s edition, Editor Buck Traxler incorrectly identified Conrad High School’s new principal. He is Ken Larson, not Olson. In addition, there were other errors. Larson taught in Charlo, not Choteau. The other miscue is that son Shane is attending Prairie View School and Kale is attending Meadowlark. Therefore, in all due respect for Mr. Larson, we are re-printing the article with the proper corrections.
After serving for a year, Paul Stenerson has once again retired from the principal’s position at Conrad High School.
Readers will recall that Stenerson came out of retirement to temporarily take the position so that the school board would not have to be rushed into finding a replacement.
Now, Ken Larson, a Montana native from Ekalaka, where more than one person jokes, “You can see the end of the world from here,” has taken over the reins as principal at CHS.
After his graduation from high school, Larson went on to Eastern Montana College in Billings. He then crossed the Continental Divide to teach and coach basketball in Corvallis. In addition, he taught for a time in Charlo.
In 2004 he and his family picked up their bags and moved out to Circle, which was his first job as a principal, going from a school with more than 500 kids to one with just 80. “It was cozy and tight knit there,” he said. He went on to add, “And that is my professional path.”
Asked why he chose Conrad to apply for the position, he said, “This is not a knock on Circle, but with 200 students here, there are more options as a parent.”
He and his wife, Sande, who is a master teacher and will be instructing first grade at Meadowlark School, have four sons.
Their boys cover the range of all four schools in Conrad. Seab, 16, is at CHS, Sam, 13, goes to UMS, Shane, 10, is at Prairie School and Kale, 8, goes to Meadowlark.
He also notes that Conrad is not as remote as Circle and “When I got here, I felt I was going to move, but in Conrad, that feeling is not there.”
Larson is quick to add that Circle did a good job of preparing and guiding him to Conrad.
With four boys in the school system, it looks like the principal position at CHS will be secure for a very long time.
