Ken Larson takes over as CHS principal
NEW PRINCIPAL – Ken Larson, originally form Ekalaka, will be the new principal as Conrad High School opens their doors for the new school season. He comes to Conrad by way of Circle. I-O Photo by Buck Traxler
After serving for a year, Paul Stenerson retired from the principal’s position at Conrad High School.
Readers will recall that Stenerson came out of retirement to temporarily take the position so that the school board would not have to be rushed into finding a replacement.
Now, Ken Larson, a Montana native from Ekalaka, where more than one person jokes, “You can see the end of the world from here,” has taken the reins as principal at CHS.
After his graduation from high school he went on to Eastern College in Billings. Not unfamiliar with the Golden Triangle area, he taught in Choteau for eight years before crossing the Continental Divide to teach and coach basketball in Corvallis.
In 2004 he and his family picked up their bags and moved out to Circle, which was his first job as a principal, going from a school with more than 500 kids to one with just 80. “It was cozy and tight knit there,” he says.
He went on to add, “and that is my professional path.”
Asked why he chose Conrad to apply for, he said, “This is not a knock on Circle, but with 200 students here there are more options as a parent.”
He and his wife, Sande, who is a master teacher and will be instructing first grade at Meadowlark School, have four sons.
Their boys cover the range of all four schools in Conrad. Seab 16, is at CHS, Sam 13 goes to UMS, Shane 10, is at Meadowlark and Kale 8, goes to Prairie View School.
He also notes that Conrad is not as remote as Circle and “When I got there, I felt I was going to move, but in Conrad, that feeling is not there.”
Larson is also quick to add that Circle did a good job of preparing and guiding him to Conrad.
With four kids in the school system, it looks like the principal position as CHS will be secure for a very long time.
