By Buck Traxler, I-O Editor Trustees approved and set the levies for the May 8 school election. Voters will cast their ballots for District 10 in the Conrad High School commons at 308 S. Illinois from noon to 8 p.m. or the Miami District 31 school house. There will be three issues for voters to decide on. Incumbent Jill Johnson is the only person to file for the three-year trustee position. For the high school general fund, the district is requesting an increase in local taxes in the amount of $30,117 that is about 4.5 mills. It is for the general maintenance and operation of the school district. Passage by voters on the proposal will increase taxes on a home with a market value of $100,000 by about $9.13 or on a $200,000 home by $18.25. The elementary general fund request is for $54,785, which is about 8.44 mills. On a home valued at $100,000, it would raise taxes about $17.31 and on a $200,000 home it would raise taxes approximately $34.62. However, that figure could possibly drop back to $34,000, depending what the legislation does as it winds down in its final days. Ken Larson has been offered the principal position at Conrad High School. He is from Circle and he and his wife have four children. “In all probability, he will be ratified at the next school board meeting,” said Superintendent of Schools Lynn Utterback. More information will be forthcoming on Larson after his position at CHS has been ratified. One resignation was acted upon, that of Traci Stokes, a part-time grade K teacher, who will be moving to Columbia Falls to be with her husband. Cheerleader coach/advisor Sandy Herring has also submitted her resignation. On the other side, Ray Hofstad was recommended to be a bus driver. Molly Gemar was hired to be the UMS track coach. Rebel Reilly and Tom Fagan will be her assistants. And, Mike Brownell and Jodi Gollahon were hired in a shared position as assistant softball coaches. There was a request to use the football field for a flag football game between law enforcement personnel and students in June. Proceeds of the game will help Lane Judisch, Ryan Riewer and Jeremy Farnstrom with expenses to go “down under” this summer. Youth basketball games were approved for later in the fall. All functions and events need to have proof of liability insurance. Trustees are looking at insurance bids from various companies, district transportation agreements were passed and Utterback did a fitness report that goes on to the OPI concerning the gender and economic of students. The goal of this is to find ways of reaching all kids. An auction of old school property was fairly successful. A new refrigerator will be purchased for the kitchen. Salary negotiations will be starting for the secretaries and aides. The architect firm of L’Heureux, Page, and Werner, out of Great Falls were officially accepted to help the district fashion a 20-year master plan for the schools. A facility committee has already been set up and now will begin meeting, sometime around the 24th of the month with engineers and representatives of the architect firm to evaluate school buildings for wants and needs, heating, wiring and space expansion. The committee will be getting input from staff within the schools and the community in this ongoing process. Students of the Month that were introduced to the trustees included Freyja Swanson from CHS, three shared the honored from UMS, Kasey Brownell, Alex Samsal and Kaci Watterud, and from Meadowlark School, Madison Botsford. The next regular meeting of the trustees will be May 8, 7:30 p.m. at the Russell Bldg. conference room.
