FLYING OFF – Wes Edwards of Missoula comes off his horse in the saddle broc competition for no score on Saturday. I-O Photo by Buck Traxler Rain, shine, windy or balmy, cold or hot, it makes no difference. The 68th annual Trail Days Whoop-Up Celebration, along with the second go around of the Conrad Rhubarb Festival was a smashingly good event. While weather kept some folks from coming out to the rodeo, Chairman Jayme Byrnes was more than happy. “We had 12 Canadians come down to be in the rodeo, more than ever before,” he said, “that’s fantastic.” Final figures weren’t available by press time, but it was known that the rodeo did not lose money and that means a number of community projects will see some funding later on. Dan Majerus felt good about the rodeo, noting that entries were up and the $20,000 prize money paid out was a good thing. Bonnie Poser over at the N’ Thing clothing store was very happy with the turn out for the Rhubarb Festival. There were 30 vendors lining the 400 block of Main St, which was closed to through traffic after the Big Parade. That was 11 more than last year and more folks hanging around than you could shake a stick at. Kit Finlayson, not only can play the piano and sing, but she can bake as well. She took first place in the rhubarb pie-contest. Donna Hesley baked her way into second place and Joan Larson captured third. With an upside down rhubarb cake, Kyla Riphenberg won first in desserts, D. Hesley was second and Sue Ellen Yakelewicz took third. The biggest grown rhubarb leaf was 34 inches with Seth Moerkerke winning this event. Cheryl Tornga was second with a 31-inch leaf and Mary Ann Arnot with a 30-inch leaf was in third. Rhubarb Button winners were Ethel Borchard, Judy Ketterling and Terry Aakre. This year there were eight young ladies vying for the title of Whoop-Up Queen and scholarship money. Karina Moulton collected over $1,440 and was crowned queen and presented with her tiara by rodeo clown Zane Drishinski. Other contestants included Shannon Elings, Samantha Romo, Jerrica Harris, Naydene Matheson, Chelsey Anderson and Rachel Inman. At the Children’s Parade, Nevaeh Diedrich and Addison Sullivan won first for “Haircreations.” Alyssa Payne, Uriah Payne and Ellen Ilaya took second for “Rhubarb Family” and Amanda Moulton was third for “Mariah.” Colton Billmayer had the Best Pet with Dolly, Molly Gianarelli and Emily Harwood were in second and Lucas Berthelson placed third. For the Best Entry on Wheels (not bikes), Jarek Shephard captured first, Natlie Coyle was second and Caden Huntsinger third. The Best Bikes division saw Kelley Billmayer in first place with Tory Durnell in second and Cale Ostrom in third.
