Page 1 of 2 The Farm Service Agency (FSA) has made program payments of $7,987,508 to Pondera County farmers and ranchers. The FSA is an agency under the United States Department of Agriculture. In Montana, the FSA administers programs that provide incentives and compensate a diverse agricultural community. Readers may recall the FSA began in 1995 when the former agency, the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) joined the ranks with the agricultural lending programs of the former Farmers Home Administration (FmHA). Both of these agencies were born out of the dust-bowl legislation in the 1930s-40s, which provided financial assistance to farmers and ranchers. During their fiscal year, running from Oct. 1, ’06 to Sept. 30, ’07, the FSA in Montana issued more the $245.5 million in program payments and loans to Montana farmers and ranchers. Chouteau County received the most in program payments with $19,006,505. By contrast, Silver Bow County received the least amount, $4,386. In between, in our area, Teton County received $10,021,070; Toole $9,503,725; Pondera County $7.987,032 and Glacier County $6,062,025. The FSA made 322 loans for almost $40 million in direct and guaranteed farm-operating loans. Portions of these funds included 14 loans for $61,200 from the Youth Loan Program, which provides youths the chance to learn how to manage a business.
