The Pondera Regional Port Authority (PA) acted quickly when the opportunity presented itself to clean up a choice commercial lot on Main St. in Conrad.
Cheryl Curry, PA manager, said, “Word was received that the property, known as the Motel Conrad, which has been closed and abandoned for some time, would be available for back taxes.”
The PA, found that the property had gone to the bank but there was interest in the buildings to be moved from the property if they could move quickly.
The PA contacted the community economic organizations of EDC and PCP, for loan assistance to purchase the property, and closed the deal to have the old motel units moved.
Curry says, “The PA feels that this is a win-win situation for all.” The building mover has a good use for the old motel units, and the area will now be a prime site for future commercial development.
With the overpass on the schedule for completion in 2009, these lots are a great location for many types for Main Street businesses.
Conrad Chief of Police Garry Dent commented he is relieved to have the abandoned buildings being moved, as they have been a concern for law enforcement for some time.
