Quilts for Cancer sewing workshop set for Jan. 20 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 12 January 2007
The public is invited to participate in a Quilt for Cancer sewing workday at the Meadowlark School gym in Conrad (17 3rd Ave. SW) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 20.
Participants will spend the day making flannel quilts to donate to cancer victims.
The quilts are simple to make and sewing skills of any level are welcome. There will be a variety of patterns and flannel to choose from so quilters can add a little of their own personality to each quilt.
For those who like to help, but aren’t sewing enthusiasts, people will also be needed to clip quilts and make lunch.
People of all ages are welcome to attend, but an adult should accompany children 10 and younger.
Participants may work all day, or just contribute their time and talent for an hour or two.
All of the materials will be provided except sewing machines and scissors, so participants should plan to bring these items, if possible.
Extra extension cords and surge protectors would also be helpful.
4-H cooking members will provide a complimentary lunch, door prizes will be awarded throughout the day, and participants may take home some simple patterns for making their own flannel rag quilts.
Lunch and door prizes will be provided courtesy of the donations from Pondera County 4-H clubs, Pondera County 4-H Leaders Council and many area businesses.
County 4-H teen leaders are organizing the event and hope to draw 4-Hers and residents of all ages from the Golden Triangle to have a fun day of good company and the opportunity to bring some warmth to someone who is suffering from cancer.
Their goal is to complete at least 50 quilts throughout the course of the day.
Quilts will be given to cancer victims from all of the U.S. Those who come to help may request a specific quilt for a friend or relative who have cancer.
The Gebhart Family Foundation will provide the flannel for the quilts.
Sindi Gebhart and her siblings started the Foundation in the summer of 2002.
They started it in memory of their mom who died of cancer. Their mother used to make quilts for cancer victims when she had a chance.
Now her children have taken that idea and made it bigger. The Foundation is funded mostly by her kids, some from donations, and partly by a Walk/Run that is held in Idaho every year. The Foundation has sent quilts to over 30 different states so far.
