At their annual winter meeting, Conrad Dollars for Scholars directors once again saw growth in scholarship giving. Treasurer Jim Meier reported donations from their year-end newsletter continue to come in from Conrad High School alumni. “But, notable contributions have put their endowed assets at an all time high,” he reported. At the top of the list for donations is a $7,000 addition to the Rossberg endowment. Art Rossberg (Class of 1944) continues to recognize Conrad as the place where he and his siblings were raised with a firm foundation. He took his strong work ethic, along with continuing education, and became successful in banking. The Rossberg families pay tribute to the Conrad community and school system with their endowed scholarship. In the nine years of Rossberg Scholarships, $11,975 has been awarded to graduating seniors who demonstrate financial need. This year there will be two awards of $1,550 each. The George and Betty Ellingson family started their Conrad Dollars for Scholars endowment with the intent that they could give back to the community, which supported them in their business endeavors for many years. LeAnn Ellingson-Hermance sits on the DFS board as a Charter Member and secretary. Patty Ellingson-Orcutt donates her time as a member of the scholarship selection committee. With an added $5,000 donation, the Ellingson endowment fund now generates two $500 scholarships. These go to students who plan to enter the studies of business. The family of Sylvester and Marie Ries continue to make additions to their endowment fund. Just as the Ries children received encouragement that helped to attain their education goals, they now would like to impart that same inspiration. The Ries family views their scholarship offering beyond the monetary value. It comes from a family who atoned higher education as a precious element in becoming a complete individual. Their $500 awards will be presented to two students. Since 1998, the Gary and Leo’s Conrad IGA has been a foundation of DFS’s scholarship giving. Annual fund-raising summer golf tourneys and their successful annual wine tasting event have garnered another donation to the IGA Endowment. With the added donation of $1,087, their permanent endowment is now at $30,000. IGA manager Jamey Byrnes can present at this spring’s CHS Awards Day another $2,800 to meritorious seniors. This brings to the total of $20,450 that IGA has handed out to show support for Conrad kids and their families. Other endowment donations came from memorial gifts throughout the past few months. Since its inception, Conrad DFS had a true supporter in Gordon Matheson. He lauded the DFS Motto, “To go as deep into the pool of deserving applicants as possible.” His diligence and attention to detail were respected as a board of director and also as he served on the scholarship selection committee. His service to community and church brought stimulation to the people of this community. Matheson memorial gifts were added to the Dollars for Scholar’s endowment, which generates an annual $450 scholarship. Generous memorials honoring Vaughn Dutro will create a new scholarship for this year’s seniors. Since Dutro drew success from dedication to his Ag-related equipment dealership, the family wanted to create a scholarship, which would benefit students entering agriculture or Ag-related studies. One CHS 2007 female senior and one male senior will be awarded the $570 Vaughn Dutro Memorial Scholarship. CHS Alumnus, Ron Turk, made an unselfish gift to honor the memory of his father, Jim Turk. This $1,000 donation will be added to the Conrad Dollars for Scholars own Community Endowment Scholarship Fund. Those students who document a community service throughout the last year are eligible for one of two $500 scholarships. This scholarship also becomes more valuable as matching funds are available, also based on community service dedication. In preparation for their 12th appearance at CHS Awards Day, Conrad Dollars for Scholars is reminded of one of their main goals: To give every deserving, successful applicant a scholarship to further his or her education dreams. With the help of dedicated volunteers and donators, CHS graduates’ ambitions can be realized.
