Of the 14 items on the agenda for city council members, three dealt with speed control signs at various locations around town. Leslie DeVries, who lives on the corner of 1st Ave SE and S. Washington, requested the city put in a stop sign at 1st Ave and ideally two yield signs. ”There are a lot of kids playing in the street and elderly folks who walk there,” she noted, adding, “It’s a big area, they (vehicles) can get going at a pretty good rate of speed.” Chief Gary Dent commented that “Stop signs would make the most sense, but a four-way stop would not be justified.” Mayor John Shelvin said, “I recommend we take a look at this to see what is the best way to handle it.” Action may be taken at the next council meeting. The aldermen did take action on the Iowa St. speed signs leading to the ball fields and on a recommendation by alderman Gary Brown, the 15 MPH signs will be taken down from Sept. 1 to April 1. This measure passed 4-0. On the Wind River Estates speed signs, 15 MPH, it was decided to table any action until more information could be gathered. The council briefly discussed a Task Order for bid and design of the wastewater project from Morrison Maierle, Inc., engineers. Brown made a motion to reject the task order. “We were given a range and then they increased it by five percent. While that may not sound like much,” he said, “the project goes up about $150,000. It just goes up and up and I will not sign off on it.” Sandy Syvertson commented, “I agree with Gary, they (M&M) need to go and look at it again.” The council rejected the task order bid on a 4-0 vote. Mayor Shevlin will write a letter to M&M informing them of the decision. A number of building permits were approved; one a 3 N. Washington, 20 N. Kansas, 220 S. Kansas, all for fencing projects. At 114 S. Virginia, a garage addition permit was passed and at 414 S. Michigan, the fixing of a basement foundation were all approved. There was action taken on a water contract as well.
