SLIDING IN – Cowgirl Karina Moulton starts her slide into third base, trying to stretch a double into a triple, but the Refiner player is waiting for her with the ball in her glove. Coach Sandy Syvertson is ready to help the umpire with the call which didn’t go his way. The hit drove in a run as Conrad came on to win the contest. I-O Photo by Buck Traxler “Steeerike,” was a common call from the umpire behind the plate on Thursday afternoon as Cowgirl pitcher Kaytlin Fowler mowed down one Sunburst Refiner after another. The junior pitcher poured in one strike after another fanning 15 batters as the Cowgirls won their second game of the season 8-3. With her 15 strike outs in a game, she tied her own school record she had set in a win over Simms last week. With her battery mate Olivia Campbell, Fowler fanned five of the first six batters she faced. Conrad got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Chelsey Anderson took a pitch for the team and then made her way to second on a wild pitch. Then Karina Moulton lined a double into right center scoring Anderson with the first run of the game. On a nice defensive play, Moulton was out at third trying to stretch her two-bagger into a triple. The Cowgirls would add two more runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the third and then broke open a close contest, 3-1 with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sunburst was able to push across two runs in the top of the seventh but it wasn’t enough and Fowler had her second win of the season. Conrad got their eight runs off of 10 hits. They committed four errors. The Refiners collected two hits and had three errors. For the Cowgirls, Heather Newmiller went 2-3, Ashley Fetters was 1-2, Moulton 3-4 (dbl.), Kelli Fagan was 1-2, Kasey Brownell 1-2, and Campbell 2-3. Over the weekend the team was in Columbus for two games and suffered losses in both contests. In a game they probably should have won, errors killed the team, having four in one inning. They also had 11 hits and stranded 12 runners. Colstrip had two hits in the game and scored four unearned runs to pull out a 4-2 win. Fowler took her first loss the season. She struck out three, allowed only two hits and did not walk anyone At the plate, Fowler went 2-4 with a double, Moulton 1-4, Ashley Fetters 4-4, Stephanie Murphy 2-4, and Campbell 1-4. In their second contest, the Cowgirls lost 10-0. Fowler took her second loss of the season, moving her record to 2-2. The Columbus pitcher fanned 17 Cowgirls and limited the team to one hit and that was by Heather Newmiller. Fowler fanned three, didn’t walk anyone and gave up six hits. Monday the Cowgirls went to Browning and Tuesday were in Shelby. Facing Browning, the Cowgirls lost their third game of the season, 10-3. The team hurt themselves, committing nine errors. Fowler limited the Indians to three hits in the game. Newmiller was 1-3, Fowler 1-3, Fetters 3-4 with a double, and Murphy 1-3.
