Riley Styren then singled to left and C. Johnson stepped into the box and promptly floated a long towering drive over the left field wall for an 8-1 lead. Alex Macias singled to left and after Bandow fanned, Robison rifled a shot over the 1st Liberty sign and a 10-1 lead. The Cards continued the onslaught with six more runs in the fourth and one more in the top of the sixth. The Sparkies rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh but fell short of keeping the game alive. With a 17-5 lead after seven innings, the game was called for the 10-run mercy rule. The Cards got their 17 runs off of 16 hits and were helped by six Sparkie errors. Swanson stroked a pair of doubles while Johnson and Robison each smacked round trippers. Saturday morning the Cards took the field along with the Great Falls Stallions. C. Johnson started on the mound. While he didn’t allow a hit in the first inning, he still walked in two batters to fall behind 2-0. He allowed only one hit through four innings, but the Cards still trailed in the game 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth Swanson led off and was hit by a pitch. He would score on a double by Jade Premo. After Styren grounded out, Johnson helped himself with a towering two-run homer and a 4-3 Cardinal lead. The team got one more run to make the score 5-3. They got their four runs on two hits, five walks, a wild pitch and a hit batter. Tri-County scored four more times in the bottom of the sixth on three hits, a Sparkie error, and a balk by the pitcher to lead 10-2. The team went on to win 11-7. The Cardinals sent both Great Falls teams packing and homeward bound. Now the Cardinals were pitted against the Lethbridge Miners in a 5 p.m. contest. The home boys wasted little time in getting on the board with the Miners. They jumped out to a quick 4-0 in the top of the first inning. C. Johnson singled. Macias tried to bunt him to second, but was safe on a wild throw to first, putting runners at second and third. Bandow struck out, but the ball got away from the catcher. Johnson scored from third and Bandow was safe at first, 1-0 Cards. Robison hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Macias. Shea and Swanson then smacked back-to-back doubles to make the score 4-0 after the first inning. The Miners picked up two runs in the bottom of the second and a single run in the third. They finally tied the contest with a run in the fifth and added three more runs in the seventh to lead 7-4. Tri-County countered with a run in the seventh. In the top of the eighth Macias was hit by a pitch. Bandow walked and then the pitcher plunked Robison, loading the bases. O. Johnson ripped a two run double to right field and after Shea struck out, Swanson stroked a two-run single to put the Cards back on top 9-8. However, the lead was short lived. The Miners rallied for four runs to go back on top 12-9 and that was how the game ended and the season for Tri-County. Sunday morning the Miners defeated the Medicine Hat Knights, earning the right to play Vauxhall for the district championship. The Spurs came on to spank the Miners 19-2. These two teams will play in the state tournament this weekend in Vauxhall. Tyler Bucklin and Tyson Anderson coached the Cardinals. The American Legion payers included Colby Johnson-Conrad; Brent Bandow and Bjorn Swanson, both of Conrad; Michael Shea of Cut Bank; Riley Styren-Brady; Justin Philipps-Conrad; David Ratzburg-Ledger; Jake Robison-Shelby; John Johannsen-Sunburst; Jade Premo-Kevin; Orin Johnson, Alex Macias and Joey Hallenberg, all of Cut Bank; Nick Pruttis-Conrad; Chet Pannabecker-Choteau; Matt Alford-Shelby and Shane Rauscher-Conrad.
