Despite some gusting winds, Saturday was a good day for the season ending Todd Johnson Memorial tourney at the Pondera Golf Club.
In one of the biggest turnouts ever, 33 two-person teams teed it up for a day of fun on the links followed by a steak dinner.
Curly Williamson and Denny “the dog” Knickerbocker of Shelby came on to become repeat champions, shooting a +35 using a modified Stableford scoring system.
The champs’ card featured five eagles, one in the nine hole-qualifying round and four over the 18 holes of tournament play.     They had three eagles at the 502-yard par five first hole and then two eagles at the 378-yard par 4 eighth hole.
Under the Stableford scoring system they shot a +35, which equates to a score of 60 in regular play, 12 under par over the 6,796 yard PGC layout.
Placing second in the championship flight was TJ Bennyhoff and Lane Judisch with a +33. Third place went to Kyle Scott and Joey Diekhans of Fort Benton, one shot back at +32.
In the first flight father and son teams took the top two spots. Mark and Nathan Gage captured first with a +21. Lyle and David Orcutt teamed up to get second with a +16 while Ryan VanDyke and “Oly” were one shot back at +15.
Tim VanDyke and Lee Diedrich took top honors in the second flight with a +8. Jay and Monica Taylor followed them at +6. Scott Arvidson and former Pondera County Sheriff Leon Simpson teamed up and placed third with a +3.
In the third flight, it was Chase and Gary Swanson taking first with a +5. Casey and Greg Vandenacre were next with a score of +3 while Jeff Hardy and Jamie Hutton took third at +1.
Mixed couples dominated the fourth flight with Chris and Judy Ellis finishing on top of the pack with +9. Tyler and Jodi Will fashioned a +4 to get second and Jaren VanDyke and Luke Kleinsasser placed third with a -6.
For hole prizes, J. Will belted the long drive for women at the ninth hole. J. Taylor rode a big gust of wind and smashed his tee shot out of sight for long drive men at the first hole. He was also closest to the pin in two shots at the second hole.
    T. VanDyke had the short drive for men at the eighth hole and was closest to the water without going in at the seventh hole.
Bennyhoff was closest to the pin at number six, Craig Ross was closest to the pin at number three, Kyle Scott hammered home the long putt at number seven and J. VanDyke was closet to the prize at number five.
Proceeds from the tournament go to a scholarship fund.
