The Winkley Women’s Center Mobile Mammography van that has been coming to the Pondera Medical Center every other week has been imaging a full schedule of patients since beginning in May. The services to the women of Pondera County and the surrounding area include state-of-the art digital Mammography and dedicated breast ultrasound. Both diagnostic and screening exams are performed. Mammography is only part of a total package, breast self-exams and physical exams by a health care provider are of equal importance. The PMC accepts the Montana Breast and Cervical Health Program (MBCHP) vouchers that pay for clinical doctor exams, Mammograms and pap smears for low income and uninsured women. Eligibility is determined by income and age. Information about the MBCHP can be obtained from your personal physician or the Pondera County Health Department by calling Cynthia Grubb, the county health nurse or Jackie Bonser at 271-3247. Last year the MBCHP screened nearly 50 women in Pondera County. The number of women in Montana diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 was 789 (from the 2007 surveillance report) more than doubling the second most diagnosed cancer of the lung in women. Nationally, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is a must and early treatment can be a lifesaver. The Winkley Mammography van will be at the PMC on Sept. 5-19. To schedule an appointment, contact the PMC X-ray Department at 271-3211 ext. 220. The Dexa Scan Van will also be at the PMC on Sept. 11. You must have an order form from your physician for this service.
