Page 1 of 2 MSU Extension Family Economics Specialist Marsha Goetting will be offering workshops in Shelby and Conrad on Jan. 22-23, respectively. Goetting will provide estate-planning seminars for the general public and specifically for farmers and ranchers both days. She will also discuss the basics of managing credit wisely in a workshop on Jan. 23 only. In Conrad, on Jan. 23, she will offer Credit Savvy from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Estate Planning for the General Public from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m., and Estate Planning Update for Farmers and Ranchers from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. All seminars in Conrad will be at the Conrad Community Center, 106 S. Delaware St. The estate-planning workshop for the general public will help participants address the following key elements in estate planning: Designing a will that truly controls the distribution of assets. Considerations when choosing a guardian and conservator for minor children. The impact of how property is titled in regard to who inherits it. How to avoid probate on real property with a beneficiary deed. Making use of PODs and TODs on financial accounts to avoid probate of these assets. Implications of dying without a will. How to locate MSU publications that address the above and other estate planning and financial management issues. Ranchers and farmers face specific estate challenges, in addition to what most people need to consider. Even families who have already prepared wills may benefit from learning about newer estate laws, such as the following: The Montana Deed Law that went into effect last October. Making use of PODs and TODs on accounts to avoid probate of these assets. How to minimize the federal estate tax bracket. How to receive a $1000 stipend for completing an estate plan.
