Secrets are few and far between in Conrad, or any small town for that matter. However the Pondera Golf Club (PGC) may be a secret to a lot of folks. For way too many years the PGC, located a little more than a mile west of the stoplight on Main St., has been referred to as “The Country Club” thus giving the impression that it is a private membership club. Nothing could be further from the truth. The PGC is a non-profit and open to the public not only for golfing, but other functions such as wedding receptions, family and class reunions, gatherings like the Conrad Chamber of Commerce or the Red Hat Ladies, business meetings, no matter how big or small. With a full liquor license, the PGC is the only eatery/tavern in Conrad with a really cool view. You can look out over the golf course and back towards Conrad, either from inside an air-conditioned smoke-free building or out on their covered patio while you sip on your favorite beverage. The restaurant portion of the PGC has a special every Friday. This week it just happens to be stuffed green peppers, whipped up by assistant club manager Teri Jo Fitzpatrick. If you happen to like a special dish, you can even ask her to fix it up for the Friday special and if at all possible, she will try to get out on a Friday night. An every-night-special that is becoming extremely popular is the “Bucket of Beer and Basket of Wings.” “For $14 you get a six-pack of beer and many, many wings,” says Fitzgerald. Asked how many is many, she came back and chuckled, “More than you can eat.” Of course there are the every-restaurant staples of hamburgers and fries and hot dogs as well as chicken and beef strips, beer battered mushrooms and mini-tacos. On the golfing side, even if you don’t play, but are looking to get out of the house and off the couch and away from summer TV reruns, the PGC has a twi-light special of golf after 6 p.m. for only $7. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are women’s and men’s league nights, but Monday, Thursday and Friday are super times for nine holes of twi-light fun and even a light meal after. You can watch the sun set over the Rocky Mountain Front as you mosey around the course. It just doesn’t get much better than this. Couples or singles may want to come out on Thursdays around 6 p.m. and join the fun of mixed golf. This isn’t structured golf by any stretch of the imagination, just a lot of fun for couples. If you have family or friends coming to visit and they play golf, they may be interested to know the PGC has punch cards available which can be used to rent carts as well as play. During the week, the golf course is open from 9 a.m. to dusk and on weekends at 8 a.m. to dusk. The clubhouse is open from 9 -2 a.m. daily. The CHS 20 year class reunion has part of their events scheduled at the PGC this weekend and on July 21 the Tavern Association is hosting their annual Christmas in July tournament. Proceeds of this tourney go to buy food baskets for those in need in Pondera County. On Aug. 25, the Todd Johnson tourney, or the TJ as it has become known will take place. This is the last big tournament of the season and is a lot of fun. Proceeds go towards local scholarships. The PGC has hired Kristi Ren as the course supervisor. She was born in Brady and is the granddaughter of Kip Keller. Cindie Vandenberg manages the PGC, Fitzgerald is the assistant manager. Assisting you are Andrea Boehmler, Cassie Fagan, Cale Fitzgerald, Hope Reardon and Rebel Riley. If you have any questions or need more information about the Pondera Golf Club, call 278-3402.
