Rhubarb Festival teams up with Whoop-Up festivities
Wednesday, 28 February 2007
Hoping to rejuvenate the Whoop-Up Trail Days Celebration, the Conrad Lions Club has moved the two-day rodeo and other events from the third weekend in May to June 9.
Members felt that a later date would help bring in bigger crowds and better Cowboys to the stock arena.
Now another gala affair will be added to the roster of events taking place before the rodeo on Saturday.
After many years, a highly successful Rhubarb Festival in Ulm had outgrown the workers who put it on and the annual event was going to be cancelled.
Bonnie Poser, of Conrad heard about the Festival coming to a close and called one of the top organizers to see about moving “Rhubarbs” and making it a part of the Whoop-Up.
She was the first of a number of Northcentral area towns who called to see about having the Rhubarb Festival come to their town. However, since Poser was the first caller, the festival will be making a move about 70 miles up I-15 to Conrad.
Inadvertently, by choosing June 9 for their new rodeo date, it seems this date is just about at the height of the rhubarb season, ”Which,” says Poser, “Makes the move to Conrad a perfect fit.”
She went on to add, “We should be able to get a lot of folks involved here. There are some really great cooks in Conrad, the county and in Choteau and we can get them involved in this event.”
Poser says that vendor tables will be set up on Main Street with rhubarb pies, tarts, syrups, and jellies and anything else made with thick roots or leaves.
To help kick the event off in Conrad, one of the original organizers of the festival in Ulm, Donna Dugas, said she and other “Rhu-Barbs” as they are called down there, will come up and help get the “happening” off to a grand start.
Poser says they will round up 1,000 pounds of the rhubarb crop, share recipes and turn over a list of vendors who want to be a part of the festival.
Poser is open to rhubarb ideas noting, “anything goes.”
Proceeds from the festival will stay in Conrad to help with community projects.
To help or volunteer with the festival or be a vendor, contact Poser at 278-5408.
June 9 is coming, time for a little R&R, Rodeo and Rhubarb.

Proposed water, sewer rates hit the table for opening discussion
Wednesday, 28 February 2007
By Buck Traxler, I-O Editor
At the city council meeting on Tuesday evening, proposed increases for water, sewer, and garbage rates were introduced for the purpose of discussion.
The numbers put out for consideration were a three (3) percent increase for water which would come to about nine cents per 1,000 gallons or about 96 cents per month more.
Pick up for trash would also see an increase of three (3) percent. The last garbage increase was in 2003 and the last water-sewer increase was in 2005.
The sewer increase is suggested to be 13 percent or about $2.73 per month more, about half the cost of a coffee latté.
Mayor John Shevlin who was not real happy about proposing utility rate increases commented, “We need to finance the upgrade of the sewer lagoon.” A major portion of the funding for the project was lost due to the outcome of the last election
Councilman Gary Brown commented, ”I want to look into this and be a little more educated. I have some questions about the figures, we need to sit down and go over the figures. Right now, I’m not comfortable with the increases.”
Also, Richard Anderson, city public works director, did not have costs available for the council meeting of the annual alley clean up.
Aldermen scheduled a work session for Monday evening at city hall to go over figures for the next council meting.
Before any proposed rates are acted on the city will conduct a pubic meeting for citizens input and comments.
The council took under consideration new fees for use of the pool this summer. They will be looking at a flat rate and the possible use of a punch card.
The mayor noted that the minimum wage and heat usage went up and Anderson added, “Natural gas and power are going up, you need to factor that in.”
Swimming pool fees was tabled until the next council meeting.
The council did act on a recommendation from the police commission and Chief Gary Dent and hired two new police officers, William Prince and Logan Martin. More information on the new policemen will be in the I-O soon.

Thursday in Malta, the Cowgirls opened the Northern B Divisional tourney with Wolf Point and they left the Lady Wolves licking their wounds after taking a 54-30 win.
Conrad got on the board first, there were no ties or lead changes, when Serena Johnson got a steal and fed Courtney Ellefsen who was fouled on the shot attempt, but packaged both shots from the freebie-line for an early 2-0.
Helped by a lot of Wolves turnovers, the Cowgirls jumped out to a 9-0 lead and with six points from Katie Schlepp and three from Johnson, Conrad led 11-6 at the end of the first fame.
In the second period, Anna Pearson netted a trey, Brown pumped in five, Ellefsen four and Johnson two as the Cowgirls, while struggling a bit, still fashioned a 14-6 advantage for a 25-12 lead at the break.
During the third quarter, the Wolves did not score a point from the field, getting their three points from the line. They were 0-5, 3-4 respectively.
Coach Gerry Kulpas began to bring in his bench players as Conrad led 36-15 going into the final eight minutes.
Sam Fagan, Anna Pearson, Kylee Schlepp, Jenny Silvernale, Cassie Peters and Ashley Beckham all scored in the final frame of play and Conrad moved on to semi-final action on Friday against Shelby.
It was a match-up of two 1B Conference teams and in a close back and forth game, the Cowgirls edged out their rivals, 44-40 in a contest that saw seven ties and four lead changes.
Conrad had the early advantage, 10-7, however, the Coyotes rallied back with a 15-10 run and took a 22-20 lead to the locker room at the break. In the third frame, Conrad rallied back behind a big three bomb from Keil and a long two shot right in front of the buzzer, plus eight markers from Ellefsen and two key free throws from Brown while holding the Coyotes to just six points 5-28 going to the final eight minutes.
Down the stretch Shelby rallied back with 12 points while the Cowgirls hit on just one shot from the floor and got timely free throws from Johnson and Ellefsen. The two teams were all knotted at 40-40 with three minutes to play, but from that point to the buzzer in regulation, neither team could score.
Shelby had the lost shot opportunity but missed and Ellefsen took down the rebound and the game went into overtime.
