RUNNING WITH THE TORCH Chris Zeberst carries the torch during the Conrad leg of the Special Olympics Torch Run. He is accompanied by Border Patrol Officer and Regional Coordinator, Cheree Miller and Sivel, the drug-sniffing canine. These participants began at the Port of Piegan and made it all the way to Great Falls before they passed the torch off. I-O Photo by Adam Jerome Last Tuesday many of you may have noticed some commotion on Main Street. It turned out to be the Special Olympics Torch Run. Many law officers, including local, state, and federal law enforcement throughout the area got together to help run the torch through the community on its way to Bozeman. There were over 30 participants and they ran the leg from the Port of Piegan through Browning, Cut Bank, and Shelby. From there they came through Conrad and were on to Great Falls. Highway Patrolman, Noel Duram commented, “We are looking forward to a great ride. We could not have done this without the overwhelming support from the Border Patrol and Customs agents, who were out in full force. Town Pump was a gracious sponsor in Conrad as they provided free coffee and hot chocolate to the participants.” Once the torch reaches Bozeman the games will begin on May 13. |

Photo courtesy of Coach Kim Hofstad The Conrad golf teams were in Shelby on Monday for the divisional tournament. But before that, they scrambled on area courses to get some meets in. With less than ideal weather this spring, the CHS golf teams have had trouble getting in some playtime on the links. This last week, golfers finally were able to swing the sticks in tournament play. Wednesday the team was in Havre, still with windy, chilly conditions, to play in the Rocky Boy Invitational. The B-C teams followed a C-team format where by your team consists of four players with the team score being the best of three of the four players. The Cowboys placed first with a 271 total followed by Fort Benton at 279, Cut Bank and Choteau in with 307 scores. Nathan Gage paced the Cowboys when he fashioned a nice 84. Rhett Orcutt shot a 99, Kyle Ellis was in with a 97 and Austin Fowler put together a round of 90. The second Cowboy combined for a 317-team score. Ramsey Offerdal shot a 110, Wyeld Converse 90, Doug Peters 117, and Steve Peters a 117. Medalist for the boys was Louis Schneider of Fort Benton with a 79 Gage with his 84 placed second Fowler and Converse with their scores of 90 tied for fourth place. Both of the Conrad girls placed in top 10. Jenny Silvernale placed third with a round of 101 and Kylee Schlepp came in with a 114 for sixth place. Marnee LeBrel of Fort Benton was medalist at 94 with Jessica Waldner of Cut Bank getting second with a 107. Friday the teams played in the Cut Bank Invitational. Silvernale placed third with 94 and Schlepp captured eighth with a 103 The Cowboy squad came on to get second right behind Choteau. Team scores went this way: Choteau 329, Conrad 333, Fort Benton 338, Cut Bank 343, Shelby 356, and Valier 378. Schneider was the low medalist player. Gage took second with a round of 77. He won a chip-off with Ethan Haug. When his shot stopped just 18 inches from the cup. Ellis placed ninth with an 84 and Orcutt with right behind with 85 for 10th place. |

SHUT DOWN When was the last time you saw a Road Closed sign leading to I-15 out of Conrad? Officially, a little over 10 inches snow fell in Conrad, smashing a record of 2.5 inches of the white stuff in 1999. The snow started falling on Monday night and didn’t let up until late Wednesday afternoon. Conrad officially received 10.5 inches of snow, but those of us that were in the area, know it was a lot more than that. Some people had drifts close to six feet high, preventing them from even leaving their house. By Tuesday morning road crews were having trouble plowing the snow. As fast as they plowed, the snow accumulated even faster. The people of Conrad had not seen snow fall like this in April possibly ever. Prior to the storm the record amount of snowfall for the month was a pedestrian 2.5 inches. This storm smashed the record, like Cal Ripken Jr. obliterated Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games played record. On Wednesday the conditions grew worse as nearly the entire city shut down. The city office was closed and the post office couldn’t live up to their motto, “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” I guess they should have added, except for Montana in April to that famous creed. The schools all over the area had to call a snow day, not once but twice. Former CHS Principal Paul Stenerson commented, “In all my years I don’t remember the schools ever cancelling a full day like they did last week, let alone two.” On Thursday the schools could have opened, but too many teachers that live out of town were unable to make it out of their own driveways, let alone drive to town. |
