County adopts budget
Wednesday, 26 September 2007
By Buck Traxler, I-O Editor
At their regular meeting on Wednesday morning, county commissioners adopted the FY08 budget.
Some elected official offices and management areas saw reductions in their budgets compared to last year.
For example, the commissioners reduced their budget by $7,600; the Clerk of Court $900, the Justice Court $700, buildings and grounds $5,000, the DES office $1,000, with the road section dropping $26,000 and bridges $60,000.
Commission Chairman Cynthia Johnson said, “Pondera County will increase the number of Sheriff’s deputies by one position.     All other staffing and addition compensation will remain budgeted to the amount in the job descriptions for employees and at the status when all were elected except for the County Attorney.”
The County Attorney position has been made a full-time position. Last year (FY07) and before, it was a half-time position.
The Coroner position has combined with the Sheriff’s position. The public safety budget reflects the Coroner transition and the increase of one deputy.
Johnson noted that, “The Clerk of Court office appears to be functioning at a staffing pattern established with the 2005-06 budget and will remain at that level.”
The County Road Department is currently functioning with one less employee than at this time last year, however, the position will eventually need to be filled and the budget reflects a staffing pattern similar to the ’07 fiscal year.
A 3.2 percent cost of living (COLA) increase and a 1.3 percent raise was approved for elected officials.
The Road Administrator was granted a four percent increase. The Clerk and Recorder requested and was granted an additional $2,000 for Elections Administration. The Treasurer also requested and was granted an additional $2,000.
All county employees, effective July 1, 2007, received a 50-cent per hour increase. The county contribution to health insurance, for a single employee, remained at $300 per month.

High school activities for Homecoming
Wednesday, 26 September 2007
By Buck Traxler, I-O Editor
Shorter days and cooler nights mark the first part of the fall season and to go along with that, Homecoming activity got underway at the high school.
During the week, students began the voting process for Homecoming King and Queen.
The Senior candidates are Lane Judisch and Katie Schlepp. The Junior candidates are Scott Schlosser and Kelsey Zomer.
Sophomore candidates are Justin Prewett and Jerrica Harris and the Freshman Class is represented by Brent Bandow and Heather Newmiller.
Monday kicked off with the students dressing up as Rock Stars or “Gangstas”.
The halls are lined with spirited decorations revving up the students for a week of special activity.
On Tuesday the students went from Rock Stars to Redneck and Hicks. Wednesday was Theme Day where they were directing victories and acting like the winners they are.
Thursday is Fictional Character Day with the students looking like their favorite character.
Friday is still the tradition day with everyone dressed in the school colors of Red and White. Spirit night will be held at the track field at 7 p.m.
Saturday is the “Big Day” at CHS!
Floats will be lined up and judged early with the Pep Assembly starting in the CHS gym at 9 a.m. The public is always invited to attend and see the wild and whacky skits put on by students and faculty.
Right at the end of the assembly, the King and Queen candidates will be presented and the King and Queen announced.
The parade will get going shortly after 10 a.m.
At 1 p.m. the Cowboys and Cut Bank Wolves will get together for some football.
At halftime, the Homecoming King and Queen and their court will be introduced and spirit winner, floats and hall decoration winners will be announced.
The Booster Club will put on their annual barbecue right after the football game.
At 4:15 p.m., earlier than usual, the Cowgirl varsity volleyball squad will hit the courts and snare the Coyotes of Shelby.
Following the volleyball match, the Homecoming dance will take place in the CHS commons. Happy feet will take to the floor from 9:30 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Fall is in the air; it must be time for Homecoming!

School population takes a slight dip
Wednesday, 26 September 2007
By Buck Traxler, I-O Editor
In an unofficial count the total school population has taken a slight dip from last year.
From grades K-12 there are 601 students in the District 10 school system, down from 609 last year. There will be an official student count done in February.
The student number at the high school went up from last year.
There are 51 students in the freshmen class, up from 43 last year. There are 45 students in the sophomore class, an increase of one.
The junior class, which had stayed the same, 69 students, for two years dropped down to 45 but the senior class, which had been under 50 students the last five years, jumped up to 72 for the September count.
The middle school stayed consistent with grades 6-7-8 having 52-50-53 students respectively. While on paper it may look like UMS lost a number of students in population, the fifth grade which they housed, moved back to Prairie View School which was closed for a couple of years but reopened this year.
The same can be said for Meadowlark School, which absorbed the fourth grade when PVS closed. Now, PVS is back to having two fourth grade classes
There are 41 students according to the unofficial count in the first and second grades at Meadowlark and the surprise is that Kindergarten went from 42 students to 27 for the opening of the school year.
In other news from the school board meeting, CHS Principal Ken Larson will be a back up driver for buses when paper work is completed.
Valerie Jarchow has been hired as an assistant tennis coach, Ed Krause is on board as a substitute custodian and Randi Fladstol was approved to be a substitute teacher. Anna Dalman was approved as a volleyball sponsor.
