Jones files for SD-14 seat

42_llewLlew Jones (R), born 1962, has filed as a candidate for Senate District 14.

The current Senator, Jerry Black, whose term ends in 2010, endorses Jones for this position and will serve as the Treasurer for Jones’s campaign.

He is not new to public service,  currently is serving his third term in the Montana House of Representatives where he was elected as Republican WHIP in the 2009 session He is also the Chairman of the Legislative Finance Committee.

In addition, Jones spent six years as Alderman for the City of Conrad, served as Director and President for the Chamber of Commerce, is a founding member of the Pondera Port Authority, serves on the Board of Directors for Sweetgrass Development, and is currently one of the founding members and President of the Coalition for Common Sense Use.

Mountain snowpack below average

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) reports that as of Feb. 1, mountain snowpack was below average and below last year, following the third month in a row with below average mountain precipitation.

January mountain precipitation west of the Divide was 57 percent of average and east of the Divide was 60 percent of average.

Roy Kaiser from the NRCS in Bozeman says, “The first of February is when we are at 65 percent of our seasonal snowpack maximum west of the Divide and 63 percent of our season snowpack maximum east of the Divide.”

Free grain marketing workshops

Winter meetings in Conrad, Cut Bank and Fort Benton will help grain growers learn the basic elements of a marketing plan and how to build relationships with their elevator managers.

“Grain marketing has been a focus here in the Triangle for decades. Even with all the groundwork laid, there is still a huge need to understand the principles that lead to effective grain marketing,” said Mark Major, Montana State University Extension agent in Teton County.

The meetings are organized by MSU Extension agents from the Golden Triangle to give producers a better understanding of basic marketing principles. The target audience is young couples and individuals that are seeking a basic understanding of common grain marketing philosophy.
