Wednesday morning pre-schoolers at Conrad Christian School feasted on stone soup.
 NOT SURE -- Shariden Richter, Conrad Christian preschooler, wasn?t too sure about the stone soup meal served up on Wednesday, prior to Thanksgiving.
To be perfectly honest, this reporter had never heard of stone soup and with that, did a “look around” and found the story of stone soup, which follows.
Once upon a time, somewhere in post-war Eastern Europe, there was a great famine in which people jealously hoarded whatever food they could find, hiding it even from their friends and neighbors.
One day a wandering soldier came into a village and began asking questions as if he planned to stay for the night.
“There’s not a bite to eat in the whole province,” he was told. “Better keep moving on.”
“Oh, I have everything I need,” he said. “In fact, I was thinking of making some stone soup to share with all of you.” He pulled an iron cauldron from his wagon, filled it with water, and built a fire under it. Then, with great ceremony, he drew an ordinary-looking stone from a velvet bag and dropped it into the water.
By now, hearing the rumor of food, most of the villagers had come to the square or watched from their windows. As the soldier sniffed the “broth” and licked his lips in anticipation, hunger began to overcome their skepticism.
 CHECK IT OUT -- Conrad Christian preschooler, Caden Huntsinger, used a pretzel like a magnifying glass to check out his stone soup meal.
“Ahhh,” the soldier said to himself rather loudly, “I do like a tasty stone soup. Of course, stone soup with cabbage – that’s hard to beat.”
Soon a villager approached hesitantly, holding a cabbage he’d retrieved from his hiding place, and added it to the pot. “Capital!” cried the soldier. “You know, I once had stone soup with cabbage and a bit of salt beef as well, and it was fit for a king.”
The village butcher managed to find some salt beef … and so it went, through potatoes, onions, carrots, mushrooms, and so on, until there was indeed a delicious meal for all.
The villagers offered the soldier a great deal of money for the magic stone, but he refused to sell and traveled on the next day.
The moral is that by working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved.

Hey guys and gals, having trouble with holiday shopping?
Come to the Conrad Public Library on Dec. 7 for a “homemade Christmas.”
A hearty lunch starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m. Chili, sandwich wraps and wonderful homemade pies will be served to satisfy every appetite. You may pay one fee for the entire lunch or each item can be chosen and paid for individually.
Lovely holiday items will be for sale and you can bid for them at the silent auction.
The Friends of the Library have bags of fancy poppycock for gift giving. Come early and stay late, or the ”Friends” can be your personal shopper to insure your favorite gift gets bought for Christmas giving.
An early 1930s antique quilt will be raffled and the winner chosen during National Library Week.
Tickets go on sale for this gorgeous, all hand stitched quilt at the luncheon. This is one quilt you surely want to win!
The must-see 12-foot Christmas tree is on display upstairs. It is trimmed with darling decorations made by the area school children.
Guitar and piano music will entertain you while you eat and shop at the “Library Homespun Christmas.”
The proceeds generated from this event will help fund the children’s programs at the library.
