Tillie Matthys - Conrad Senior of the Year

Tillie Matthys - Conrad Senior of the Year   Conrad Senior Center’s 2009 Senior of the Year is Matilda ‘Tillie’ Mornout Matthys.
She was born near Kalamazoo, Mich. on Dec. 12, 1912.
With her parents and older sister (Julia Anderson), she moved to Great Falls when she was four months old.
Her father worked at the smelter there and then in the mines in the Stockett area.
She started the first grade in the Electric City and later transferred to school in nearby mining towns.
When she was a seventh grader, the family settled on a farm near Dutton. She went to school through the eighth grade in Collins and on to high school in Dutton.
She graduated with the Class of 1931 with 10 other students and that was the second class to graduate from Dutton High School.
When she and her sisters traveled to school in Collins, they used a two-wheeled cart pulled by a pony until the river froze in the fall. Then they got to go to school using a Model T.
On Nov. 15, 1932, she married Bernard ‘Barney’ Matthys and they made their home on a farm east of Brady. She continued to live there after Barney passed away in 1956.
Several years ago she moved to Conrad. The couple had five children, Marjorie Peterson, Beverly Walker, Kathleen Stark, and Richard ‘Dick’ Matthys and Michele Foote who passed in 2007.
The seniors who chose her as their Senior of the Year had the following to say in her nomination: “Tillie was chosen as our Senior of the Year because she sets an example to everyone why a Senior Center is so important to our community; she attends lunch almost every day and is here for all activities provided by our center; Not even Montana winters can stop Tillie.
On Friday, after the noon meal, there will be cake and ice cream to celebrate Conrad’s Senior of the Year at the Community and Senior Citizens Center, 106 S. Deleware.
She is presently living in the Tonra Apartments.
