Community Health Fair on tap for Friday

By Buck Traxler, I-O Editor
The month of October is fast becoming the month for big events in Conrad.
We have survived the “Grand Old Party” of the Centennial bash, the raising of the new-old clock, Harvest Fest and Home Coming.
Now comes the next super event, the Pondera Medical Center Health  Fair which has moved from a traditional Tuesday to a Friday.
The Health Fair takes place Oct. 23, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will be in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 416 S. Kansas in Conrad.
Always, one of the big attractions at the Fair is the Mercy Flight helicopter from Great Falls which will be on display from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
A major health feature to the Health Fair will again be the blood screening and PSA tests. You can have this done for $40 each, (panel and PSA) for a cost of $80.
There is no better health deal in town. You can’t afford not to take advantage of this yearly special which normally would cost you hundreds of dollars.
If you take the lab tests, you are asked not to eat anything from 10 p.m. until after you have your blood drawn and to drink plenty of water.
The PMC will not bill your insurance company, or you, this needs to be paid for at the time you sign in for the tests. If needed, they will give you information for you to send in to your insurance company.
The PMC did not receive their full order of flu vaccine so the flu clinic portion has been cancelled.
There is no admission charge to the Health Fair and there will be door prizes, beverages and healthy snacks for you .
You can also get your blood sugar and blood pressure checked at no cost.
The mammography van from the Kalispell Regional Medical Center will be on hand and you can also get your lab draws done.
Mark Jones, the PMC/CEO will not kiss the pig again, but he will be at the Health Fair all day to answer any questions you may have, go over the recent PMC community survey or to discuss hospital services.
Following is the lineup of topics to be presented by our doctors, PAs and nurses.
Beginning at 9 a.m. Dr. Peter Barran will talk about Influenza; Dr. Jay Taylor will do a presentation of Stress Testing – When and Why at 9:45 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m. Lanae Williams, PA will teach you about Sleep Apnea; at 11:15 a.m. David Arens, PA will discuss Shingles.
Representatives from Benefis Health Care will talk about Women’s  Heart Health at 11 a.m. followed by a discussion on Men’s Heart Health at 11:30 a.m.
Patricia Grena, DO, will touch on Advanced Directives at noon and at 3 p.m. Mary Erickson, RN, will talk about careers in the field of healthcare.
While not exactly here to discuss health issues, Conrad Mayor John Shevlin and Pondera County Commissioner Joe Christiaens will both be on hand for you to visit with. You choose the topic.
The Health Fair is an amazing and informative community event that you will not want to pass by.
