Clutch shooting lifts Cowboys over conference rivals

This past weekend the Conrad Cowboys matched up with two conference opponents in the Fairfield Eagles and the Choteau Bulldogs.  Thanks to some clutch shooting at the end of both games the Cowboys rode away victorious.

On Friday night the Cowboys hosted the Fairfield Eagles and got the win 44-39.  The game started out with the Cowboys taking a 14 to 12 lead heading into the second quarter.  Fairfield began to make some shots in the second and took a 26-24 advantage into the locker room at the half.

Both teams came out in the third period ice cold from the field as they combined to score 11 points in the quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the game go back and forth with Rhett Orcutt and Grant Grubb hitting big three pointers at the end to give Conrad  the win and second place in the conference.

Coach Tyson Anderson commented on the win, “Our half court defense was pretty good.  Our transition defense and defensive rebounding gave them some easy opportunities.  When we got our defense set we were tough to score against, allowing only 13 points in the second half.

Conrad shot 47 Percent from the field while bringing in 22 rebounds and dishing out nine assists.  The Cowboys also tallied 11 steals while turning the ball over 11 times.

Josiah Moerkerke had a stellar game as he led the team in scoring, rebounding and assists with 19, 11 and four respectively.  Graham Grubb continues to step up his game in the absence of star guard Nate Gage as he scored 10 points and pocketed three steals.  Grant Grubb was next in line with eight points, followed by Orcutt with five and Rob Brenteson with a bucket.  Brenteson also anchored the front court defense with four blocks and four boards.

After a big win against Fairfield the Cowboys were ripe for a letdown game against Choteau on Saturday.  The Cowboys jumped out to a 21 to 13 lead after the first and a 33-28 lead at the half.  Choteau came out in the second half and got back into the game, actually taking a four point lead with four seconds left in the game.  Brenteson made a layup to get within two with two seconds left.

At that time the basketball gods shined down.  Chet Pannabecker received the inbounds pass, thinking the game was over he tossed the ball into the air.  The ball fell into Graham Grubb’s hands and he drilled a 10 footer to send the game into overtime

In overtime Conrad won the game in the final seconds after a full court heave to Ben Moerkerke who shoveled the pass back to Graham Grubb who nailed a three pointer to give Conrad its second win in as many days.

Coach Anderson commented, “What an exciting game with Graham hitting two big shots to tie and win the game.  We had a chance to put the game away a few times but let them hang around.  Give them credit for hitting some big shots.  Although it wasn’t pretty, two big conference wins for us this weekend.

J. Moerkerke once again led the team in scoring and rebounding with 24 points and nine boards.  Graham Grubb scored 16 points and led the team in dimes with seven.  Grant Grubb scored 14 markers and Brenteson tossed in 13 points and hauled in eight rebounds.  Orcutt and Ben

Moerkerke rounded out the scoring effort with four points apiece.

In another piece of good news Gage will resume practice next week with hopes of playing against Shelby the following weekend.  On Saturday the Cowboys take on the Havre Blue Ponies in a non-conference matchup in Havre.
