Over the weekend the Conrad Cowboys played two conference games against the Fairfield Eagles and the Choteau Bulldogs with the opportunity to lock up the two seed for the District tournament.

On Friday the Cowboys traveled to Fairfield and won 50-47 to guarantee the two seed.  Conrad started the game cold from the floor as they were down 14-4 at the end of the first quarter.  The offense came alive in the second quarter as they cut the deficit to 25-22 at the half.  The comeback continued in the second half as the score was tied at the end of the third period.  In the fourth, Nate Gage drilled a three pointer at the buzzer to seal the win.

Coach Tyson Anderson commented on the win, “We didn’t shoot the ball well but our defense picked up the slack and Nate hit the big one at the end.”

For the game the Cowboys shot 34 percent from the floor, grabbed 31 boards and tallied nine assists.

Gage led the squad in scoring with 18 points as he knocked down four of six trey shots.  Josiah Moerkerke and Rob Brenteson were next in line with nine points apiece.  Brenteson also led the team in rebounding with nine.  Graham Grubb scored six markers followed by Ben Moerkerke with four points.  Grant Grubb and Rhett Orcutt rounded out the scoring effort with a bucket each.

On Saturday at home the Cowboys hosted the Choteau Bulldogs and lost in a letdown game 50-44.

Conrad had the halftime advantage at 30-27, but let the game slip away in the second half as the Bulldogs outscored the homeboys 23-14.

Coach Anderson added, “Again our offense was stagnant as well and we settled for the first available shot.  We just looked a step behind after the first quarter.”

The Cowboys shot 28 percent from the field, hauled in 30 rebounds and turned the ball over nine times.

Brenteson led the team in scoring and rebounding with 13 and seven respectively.  Grant Grubb was next in line with eight followed by B. Moerkerke who had seven.

Gage and Graham Grubb each hit for six.  J. Moerkerke scored four markers.

With the District seeding locked up the Cowboys have games against Havre and Heart Butte to finish up the season.  On Saturday the Warriors come to town for Senior Night.
