CofC banquet on Wednesday

By Buck Traxler, I-O Editor

The gathering will begin about 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Norley Hall, Blue Sky Villa, with a social hour prelude to the 7 p.m. dinner of the 45th annual Conrad Area Chamber of Commerce banquet and awards night.

The theme for this year’s dinner is Musical Entertainment, which fits in nicely with the featured speaker, Mark Staples.

An attorney by profession, he has headlined at the Montana State Fair in Great Falls as an entertainer/singer. He wrote a musical about Conrad titled Harvest, which went on tour nationally, performed by the Montana Repertory Theatre and among others wrote the commercial song for Whoop-Up still used by the Lions Club.

While living in Conrad he was  a Deputy County Attorney from 1982-87.

Eventually Staples moved to Helena to practice law and perform in fundraising shows for civic and charitable causes.

Last year the UofM-Missoula honored him with the Outstanding Service award at the Grizzly Homecoming.

Among the special awards to be given out are the coveted Unsung Hero which went to Conrad High School business teacher Janie McFarland last year and the Business Person of the Year.

A new award this year is for a group or organization  that has been outstanding and needs to be recognized for their contribution to Conrad.

Also, the election results of new officers and board members will be announced.
