UMS students garner awards at Science Fair

The UMS science fair team brought home many awards from this year’s Regional Science Fair, held in Great Falls on Feb. 20.

Sixty-five science students representing thirty-seven projects attended from Utterback Middle School.  They brought home 10 Merit Awards, 12 Purple Ribbons, and 7 Top Overall Fair Category winners.

These science students competed against 13 other towns in Montana.  “This was an exceptional year for the science fair, commented UMS Science Instructor Monica Tomayer.

Students who earn an award, purple or blue ribbon are eligible to attend the State Science Fair in Missoula, on March 21-23.

UMS will also be holding a local science  fair on March 11, 2010 to give the students more practice and to give the red ribbon earners another chance to attend the State Science Fair.

The following are the awards and ribbon placing;

Deidre Mecham and Gabriele Drishinski earned Citizens for Clean Energy Merit and Student Participation Award and Citizens for Clean Energy, $10 Presidential Coins and third place seventh Grade Team in Biology Overall with; R U Being Bugged?
Meghan Bruner and Alicia Fladstol earned the Special Merit Award for Behavioral and Social Sciences and Special Merit Award for Your Health with Which Perfume Do You Prefer?

Becky Brown and Kaylea Killion earned the Special Merit Award in Chemistry and Creativity in Physical Science with Groovy Moods.

Jackson Grubb and Shane Larson earned the Special Merit Award in Creativity in Physical Science with Dirty and Sturdy.

Tamara Roos and Hayley Orcutt earned the Special Merit Award in Physics with, It’s All in the Bounce.

Genessa Naylor and Taylour Russell earned a Special Merit Award in Zoology with March of the Ants.

Danyelle Townsend and Lyndsey Yakelewicz earned a Special Merit Award in Zoology with Dogs, Dogs, Dogs, Which to Pick?

Skylar Stenson and Krisha McKinley earned a Lewis and Clark National Forest Snowshoe Trip on March 4 with Is It A Miracle or A Mystery?

Krista Judisch and Michaela DeBoo earned first place seventh grade Biological Science Team Overall  and a trip to Yellowstone Park on March 17-19 with Dance Chicken Dance. Kendra Fischer and Anna Hopper earned third place seventh grade Physical Science Team Overall with Stick On-Stick Off. Alyssa Hauer and Nicole Sasek earned fourth place eighth grade Biological Science Team Overall with Multi-Tasker Disaster. Taylor Marsciano and Elli Garman earned third  place eighth grade Biological Science Team Overall with Rock to the Beat of the Music. Brett Peters and Seth Moerkerke earned seventh place eighth grade Physical Science Team Overall with This Little Light of Mine.
