Shari M. and Todd E. Gianarelli, the trustees of the Thomas E. Gianarelli Memorial Trust have announced that Nikki Linn of Conrad is the recipient of a $1,000 grant to assist her with the expense of her upcoming People to People trip during this summer.
The Trust was formed by the parents of Tommy Gianarelli with funds donated after his death to provide financial assistance to young people wishing to attend the People to People ambassadorship program.
Tommy died in July of 2006 as the result of post surgical complications related to a congenital heart defect.
People to People is an educational student ambassadorship program begun in the 1950s by then President, Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Generally, students from grades sixth through 12 can apply to the program for the opportunity to travel with other youth for approximately 21 days.
President Eisenhower founded the program in 1956 in the belief that ordinary citizens of different nations, if able to communicate with one another, would put their differences aside and live in peace.
He believed young people were the key to building international relationships.
During the summer of 2005, Gianarelli travelled to Great Britain (Ireland, Wales and England).
He made many friends during his trip and brought back many pictures of his adventures.
The highlight of his trip was staying with a host family in Ireland and attending a course on the Welsh language at a university.
His brother, Cheney, had traveled to Europe with the program in the summer of 2004.
