UofM students are semi finalists in jingle contest

Folgers Coffee recently advertised a contest to write and perform an updated version of their Best Part of Waking Up jingle.

University of Montana student Ethan Thompson from Whitefish decided to participate and asked his recently formed band, “Nothing Rhymes with Oranges”, to perform his version.

The band is made up of Ethan as the primary vocalist, Landon Lee from Conrad on bass, Dan Coburn on drums, and Mitch Foster on acoustic guitar (though Mitch was not able to perform with the band on the Folgers video.)

The band plays mostly original jazz/pop style music and has performed at multiple venues in Missoula.

The students were notified in early March that their video was selected to be in the top 10.  The public will decide on the top five finalists by voting at bestpartofwakingup.com between March 28 and April 21.

The five finalists will be flown to New York City to compete in a live grand-prize audition for a chance to win $25,000 and possibly have their jingle featured in a future Folgers commercial.

At the live performance, the bands will be judged on musical performance, stage presentation, and creativity/originality.  Kara DioGuardi from American Idol will be one of the New York City judges.

Individuals (18 or older) can vote for one of the 10 semi-finalists each day and are automatically entered to win one of 25 daily iTunes gift cards valued at $25 and the grand prize of $10,000.

Dan is from Ashland, Ore. Ethan and Mitch are graduates of Flathead High in Kalispell.  Landon is a graduate of Conrad High School and the son of Roland and Karen Lee.
