Weather cancellations help tennis players to mesh

By Kendall Griggs, CHS Tennis Coach

Rain put the kibosh on last week’s Tennis matches halting Tuesday’s dual against Cut Bank and canceling the two-day ‘AA’ Dual in Great Falls.

Against Cut Bank on Tuesday Calen King fell to Jace Kimmet 3-8 and Austin Zomer lost to Dylan Johnston 0-8.

In doubles Luke Schlosser and Colter Knox defeated Nate Kavanagh and Chaz Cooper in a tough tiebreak match 8-7 (7-3).

On the Girls side Alyssa Keil lost to Morgan McDivitt 0-8.  The doubles team of Bethany Grubb and Emily Weisgram were defeated by Alexa Cline and Brianna Bauer 4-8.

Before lightning and rain put an end to the dual Kristine Warlick was ahead 6-3 and the doubles team of Rachel Lamb and Courtney Anderson were winning 5-2.

Though the weather attempted to ruin the week completely twenty-two players showed up on Saturday for an inner-squad doubles tournament.  Even though the wind was blowing an entire tournament was played between the boys, girls and coaches.

Coach Jensen and Griggs were defeated in the consolation finals by Colter Knox and Devin VandenBos who avenged their 2nd round loss for 3rd place.  The girls held their own in the mixed tourney as Rachel Lamb and Courtney Anderson defeated Moranda Brenteson and Taylor Judisch for 5th place.

Winners Johnny Schlosser and Camron Janzen defeated Austin Zomer and Calen King 8-6 in the Championship match to end the tournament as the sun started to shine again.

Overall the Saturday tourney was a good experience for every player to get court time and practice their doubles skills at the net.  The team had a lot of fun and competed amongst each other with plenty of laughs and some very intense moments.  It is one thing to beat a kid from another town you don’t know, but when you defeat your teammate you get to remind them of it for the rest of the year.

All in all the weekend was not a complete loss; we played tennis and meshed as a team.  This week is the last week of JV play as Cut Bank comes here on Tuesday and the Girls travel to Choteau on Thursday.  Regular season play ends on Saturday as the Boys and Girls travel to Missoula for the Best in the West Tournaments.
