On Friday and Saturday the Conrad Tennis teams traveled to Choteau for the Northwest Divisional Tournament. Both teams had a great first day of competition ending tied for 1st with Cut Bank, but were edged out Saturday by the Wolves.
The girls finished six points behind the lead and qualified four players for the State Tournament in Missoula. The boys, who automatically qualify for the State B-C Tournament, had a great weekend finishing just behind Cut Bank by 4th place victories in boy’s singles and doubles play.
Sophomore Jade Rodriguez and freshmen Megan Fetters had a good weekend in singles play, but failed to qualify for State.
Rodriguez finished 1-2 defeating Hoyt of Fairfield, but was defeated by teammate Kristine Warlick in the consolation quarterfinals. Fetters ended 2-2 on the weekend defeating Wagoner of Fairfield and Anderson of Cut Bank, but exiting in the consolation semifinals to Jillian Altenberg of Cut Bank. Alyssa Keil finished 3-2 and placed 5th to advance to the State Tournament.
Freshman Kristine Warlick had an early first round loss, but fought hard through the consolation bracket to place 3rd overall in Girls singles. She finished 5-1 defeating teammates Rodriguez and Keil, Melo of Fairfield and Maltby of Choteau. In the Consolation Championship she bested Lacey Bouma of Choteau 0-6, 6-0, 6-3 in a grueling three set match.
Bethany Grubb and Emily Weisgram finished 2nd in Girls doubles hustling through the front side of their bracket to advance to the Championship match against Cut Bank. They were in the zone on Friday defeating Fitzgerald/Harvie of Cut Bank 6-0, 6-0 and Zier/Barrett of Fairfield 6-3, 6-2.
On Saturday, against Brianna Bauer and Lexi Cline of Cut Bank, they simply met a team who came to play. Grubb and Weisgram had good shots and played well all weekend. We expect good things from them this upcoming week at State.
Junior doubles partners Courtney Anderson and Rachel Lamb had a decent showing in the tournament, but came up short Saturday against Choteau’s Spindler/Christens to finish 6th overall.
The boys team showed up strong both days against Cut Bank, but were again defeated by the perennial powerhouse. Calen King finished in 1st place in singles defeating Jeremy Moss 6-0, 6-0, Nathan Voeller 6-1, 6-2 and Jordan Hoof in the Championship 6-1, 6-2.
Teammate Paul O’Brien lost out in two and Austin Zomer and Devin VandenBos fell in the consolation semifinals ending the weekend 1-2.
Overall the Boys singles played well and improved during the weekend for next week’s State Tournament.
Doubles team Luke Schlosser and Colter Knox finished 2nd and Johnny Schlosser and Camron Janzen took 3rd respectively. Both teams played very well against Cut Bank losing to #1’s Jace Kimmet and Nate Kavanagh and defeating #2’s Dylan Johnston and Chaz Cooper.
The Boys team competed very strong over the weekend and hopefully will bring the same energy and drive to the State Competition in Missoula on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Both teams have worked hard all season for the State meet and now get the chance to go and prove themselves in Missoula.
