Wrestlers place four at Billings Invitational

33_luke8027The season for the matmen opened this past weekend with the Cowboys opening at the Billings Invitational.

Conrad had a good tournament facing off with larger Wyoming schools, as well as Class AA-A schools.

There were only three Class B/C teams in the tournaments with the Cowboys being one.

After the first day of wrestling on Friday, the Cowboys staked out a claim to 10th placed among the 17 teams with 31 points and were the highest ranked among the Class B/C schools, which were Huntley Project and Shepherd.

The top five places looked like this: Gillette, Wyo. 115, Billings Skyview 93, Billings West 83, Great Falls High 79, and Laurel 78. Great Falls CMR was just eight points ahead of Conrad in ninth place.

Early on the Cowboys got big pin wins from Luke Schlosser (112), who took down his opponent, Koby Reyes from Billings West, in 4:40.

Johnny Schlosser (160) defeated Calen Carpenter of Shepherd in just 1:35 and also dumped Trey Dillon of Skyview JV in 3:42.

Lucas Schultz (189) saw the referee slap the mat for him with a win 1:02 over Sam Molen of Skyview JV and again when he stopped Wade Cicierski of Billings Senior in 1:05.

Bryce Watterud fell by a pin in the first round but came back to place sixth in the tournament.

Conrad moved up ladder to seventh place on Saturday.

Luke Schlosser placed first, Johnny Schlosser and Schultz both took second and Watterud sixth.

The top 10 places and scores went like this: Gillette 279, Billings Skyview 210, Billings West, 190, Billings Senior 186, GFH 176, Laurel 170, Conrad 78, Skyview JV 75, CMR 72, and Buffalo, Wyo., 52.

Luke stopped his match with Cree Minkoff of Billings Senior in the championship round in 3:27.

Johnny suffered a 5-1 decision loss to Burk Burgess of Gillette and Schultz was pinned in :45 by Brown also of Gillette.

Saturday there was a JV take-down tournament in which five Cowboys saw mat action.

Garrett Moritz and Brandon French placed first and Tyler Nelson also placed.

Moritz said, “All the kids wrestled well and I was pleased.”

Thursday the Cowboys are in Shelby and over the weekend the team is down in Butte for the Mining City Duals.

The Cowboy Wrestler of the Week was L. Schlosser. “He showed great desire and a no quit attitude in his championship match,” noted Moritz.

The Stepped It Up award was shared by  J. Schlosser and Schultz. “They displayed great heart and stamina while both wrestled to a second place finish a tough Billings tour,” commented the coach.

The Practice Wrestler of the Week was Watterud and the JV Wrestle of the Week was French.
