The Cowboy matmen were represented well at the annual CMR Holiday Classic tournament in Great Falls over the weekend.
This is the next biggest tournament except for the state meet in Billings with 40 teams from all the school classes hitting the mats.
When the dust settled on Friday, Conrad was sitting in 20th place with 51 points, right in the middle of the action.
The top five places and scores looked like this: Belgrade 129; Great Falls High 125; Kalispell- Glacier and Havre (tied 105); and Bozeman 102. Conrad was the highest ranked Class B team.
Some of the team highlights for the first day included Luke Schlosser (112) taking pin win in :46; Colt Harris (135) getting a mat slap from the referee a second faster :45, over his man from Ronan; Johnny Schlosser taking a 7-0 decision against his opponent from Glacier.
Coming back in the three consolation rounds, Lucas Schultz put down three opponents by pin falls and Bryce Watterud (215) won a big 8-3 decision.
In the championship second round, Luke Schlosser won with another pin in :35 and Johnny Schlosser won with a pin in 3:31. Both the Schlosser boys picked up decision wins in the quarterfinals.
On Saturday, in the championship semi-finals, J. Schlosser suffered a 10-6 decision loss and then came back to take a decision win over his opponent from Butte to place fifth in the Holiday Classic.
L. Schlosser won a major decision, 15-2, over his Glacier man and then came on to capture the 112 Holiday Classic weight class title with a big 7-6 decision over Cameron Alverson of Belgrade.
Conrad stayed in 20th place with 72 points. GFH came back to win the tournament with 195 points while Belgrade slipped back into second with 189. Kalispell was third 185, Havre, 171, fourth and Billings Senior fifth with 153.
Coach Kevin Moritz told the I-O, the CMR Holiday attracts the very best in the state and Conrad went down and competed well.”
He went on to add, “We had only nine wrestlers this weekend what with injuries, sickness and the new ‘one F rule,’ which is going to be hard to have a full team this year.”
Down in the Falls, the Cowboys won 35 matches while giving up 28.
He added that the Cowboys will be working hard over the next week getting ready for the second half of the season. The team does not have another match until next year, when they go to Choteau on Jan. 6 for the Choteau Match Up.
The Cowboy Wrestler of the week went to Luke Schlosser. He won all five matches and is now on top of a 15 match win streak. He just knows how to step it up and win. In the championship match he was down two points and came back to take the 7-6 victory and first place hardware.
Schultz took the Step It Up award and B. Watterud was the Practice Wrestler of the Week. Garrett Moritz earned the JV Wrestler of the Week award, going 4-0 and getting first place in the JV tournament in Great Falls on Saturday.
Morgan Koenig and Harris were both in second place in their weight class with 3-1 and 2-1 records respectively in the JV tourney. Ryan Orcutt and Watterud went 2-2 and 4-2 placed fourth in their weight class.
