The regular season is half over and mat-fans finally got a chance to see the home boys in action without going on the road.
A number of area teams were in town on Thursday for a mixer in preparation for the Choteau Classic that was held on Friday and Saturday. There were two mats of non-stop performances.
At times Cowboys were on both mats at the same time, so a lot of head turning was going on in the stands.
Of the 28 matches the Cowboys were in, 20 were won by the home boys.
There were a lot of pin wins and many of those came with pretty quick times.
Colt Harris, 135, a hand slap for the referee in just :17 in match with Cody Coulture of Mission/Charlo. And Lucas Schultz, 189, did the same, taking a little longer, :24 to take care of Dave Atkinson of Cut Bank. Tyler Nelson, 171, also got a pin win in under a minute, :47, taking down Che Little Dog of Cut Bank.
Luke Schlosser, 112, who will be shooting for this third state in Billings next month, won both his matches with pin falls, both coming in just over three minutes.
Ramsey Offerdal, Ryan Orcutt and Harris were also double winners with pins.
Others to win included Morgan Koenig, one win being a major decision, 17-0, Garrett Moritz Bryce Watterud, Brandon French, Johnny Schlosser suffered a close 1-0 decision loss to Jacen Petersen of Mission/Charlo.
At the Choteau Classic over the weekend, the Cowboys put themselves in a nice position after the first day, settling into the third spot out of the 29 B/C teams that participated in the Classic.
The top five places and scores looked like this: Cascade-Simms 85, Choteau 84, Conrad 71, Townsend 60 and Florence 58.
Conrad wrestlers picked up some impressive wins by pin falls with Koenig dropping his man in :33, Moritz getting a pin fall in 1:01, Harris doing the same in :23, French getting a pin win in 1:44, Johnny Schlosser pinning his man in :56, Knox getting a pin in :56 also, Watterud go a pin in 1:36 and Luke Schlosser floored his man in 1:54.
After all the matches were done on Saturday, the standings from the first day for the top five teams didn’t change, only the scores.
Team places and scores went like this: Cascade/Simms 190, Choteau 181, Conrad 136, Townsend 133, and Florence 129.
The home boys had six wrestlers who placed in the tournament.
Luke Schlosser placed first and in the championship match pinned Drew Floerchinger of C/S in 1:07. He won all his matches in the tourney by pin falls.
Koenig and Harris both captured third place. Johnny Schlosser and Schultz each placed fourth and Knox came on to take sixth place.
Coach Kevin Moritz commented, “This is the only tournament all year beside divisionals and state that we get to wrestler just B/C schools. Our kids stepped it up and they wrestled really well all weekend.”
The Cowboy Wrestler of the Week is Luke Schlosser. Coach Moritz noted, “He is a very solid wrestler and wrestled with great intensity and desire in the 112 pound weight class.”
Harris was named for the Stepped it Up award. He worked hard to drop his weight to go in the 135 pounds class where he is more competitive and had a 6-1 for the weekend.
Tyler Nelson was named the Practice Wrestler of the Week and Ryan Orcutt was named the JV Wrestler of the Week.
Coach Moritz also noted, “This is a great tournament to prepare us for divisional and state.”
The Conrad Dual meet will be taking place on Friday and Saturday. There will be some dynamite action on the mats and a chance to come out and see the wrestlers in action.
