15_obit_dan_stokesDaniel Lyle “J.R.” Stokes, Jr., age 60 died of cancer on July 29 at a Great Falls hospital.

Private graveside services took place in Valier on Tuesday.

A public reception was held at The Keg Family Restaurant in Conrad following the services.

J.R. was born Oct. 28, 1950 to Reta and Dan Sr. Stokes of Valier.

Stokes graduated from Valier High School in 1968 and moved to Missoula where he met and married Cindy, his lifelong partner and friend.

Stokes worked for the City of Missoula Street Department for 10 years, while raising children, Monte and Marsha.

In 1980, the family moved to Conrad and he and Cindy purchased “The Keg” Restaurant with his mom and dad.

They operated the business for 31 years while adding to their family with two children, Danielle  and Dustin.

Stokes enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a good friend, a beer-drinking buddy, golfing partner, bowling teammate, hard worker, a devoted Conrad and Griz fan, and overall, the rock within the Stokes’ family.

No matter if it was golf, dice, round of beers, or pretty much anything, he always wanted, “Just one more single solitary last time.”

Survivors include his wife, Cindy Stokes, children, Monte (Kim) Stokes of Torrinton, Wyo; Marsha (Dan) Rogers of Missoula; Danielle (Daniel) Beaudin of Missoula; and Dustin Stokes of Conrad, mother, Reta Stokes of Conrad; four grandchildren, Lincoln and Liberty Rogers and Tyne and Teryn Stokes; sisters, Loretta, Rhonda, Connie and Tina; and a brother, Tom.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dan Stokes, Sr.

The Pondera Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
