On Aug. 15 at 7 a.m. sharp the Cowgirl volleyballers hit the courts, to start off the beginning of the 2011 volleyball season.
Last year was somewhat of a disappointment, as the Cowgirls were bounced out of the District tournament in two matches.
This year the players are eager to change that outcome and make a serious push to be at the top of the conference.
As the practice session and season starts, the Cowgirls are led by four seniors and three juniors who all have varsity playing experience.
Senior middle hitter Rashelle Johns was one of the top blockers in the conference last year, and the Cowgirls are looking for her to be a leader again this year.
Johns is joined by another starter from last year, setter, Brittany Greyn. Greyn is also a strong server and a very good defensive player.
Also joining Johns and Greyn, is senior hitter Ciara Bender who will be a force to face in the front row, and Shanae Newmiller, who has developed into a very good all round player.
Junior hitter Taylor Judisch also was a starter last year and can play outside and in the middle. Judisch led the team last year in kills.
Moranda Brenteson, another junior, is a strong blocker and middle hitter that will give the Cowgirls more power in the front lines. Kristine Warlick is the last junior with some varsity experience, who will be starting as the Cowgirl’s libero.
Other juniors out this season are setter and defensive specialist, Justine Desjardin, and utility player Megan Fetters.
This year’s sophomores include middle hitter Jayde Richardson, last year’s most improved player award winner, Morgan VanDyke an outside and middle hitter, Hayley Orcutt an up and coming setter, Makayla Barringer who is a good all round player, Taryn Erickson a defensive specialist and Kelcie Watterud a utility player.
The newcomers to the high school program include, Krista Judisch, Gennesa Naylor, Jenna Rodriguez, Michaela DeBoo, Deidre Mecham, Molly Gianarelli and Gabby Drishinski.
The managers for this year’s team are Faith Dyrud, Annabell Wittmier and Meghan Bruner.
Once again the Cowgirls are coached by Head Coach Dale Janzen and Assistant Coach Rebel Rilley.
The Cowgirls will open their season at Choteau on Aug. 25 and 26 as they play in the Choteau Tournament and will play some of the top competition from around the state.
However, on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m., right here at home in the Corral, the Cowgirls will be showcasing this year’s team with the red and white Scrimmage.
They invite everyone to come on out and meet this year’s teams.
All three teams, C-squad, J.V. and Varsity will play in a match setting.
